Hi guys,
Today I was cleaning out my pc since it was very dusty. I removed the heatsink+fan from my cpu, and reattached it afterwards. It was only when I tried to reboot my pc several times that I noticed the heatsink and fan wasn't connected properly. That was what was causing the crashes, after I connected it properly again, my pc has been having BSOD's and just crashes, especially when under load. Everytime I try running prime95 it crashes after a short while. I have an E8500 at stock settings.(I first tried the OC settings that always worked, but even stock doesn't work.) Is it my CPU that's damaged? The dump files said something about hal.dll+12a3b and ntoskrnl.exe+75bc0 The temps aren't overly high either.
I think it's my cpu which was overheated too much without the heatsink and fan. Not to mention the fact it took me a while to realize... Any thoughts?

Update: The CPU reaches about 87°C under load. I'm guessing that's the problem, ever since I removed and placed the heatsink+fan back it doesn't function like it should. It's placed as well as possible, time for a new cooler I guess...

Ordered some paste, it's going to arrive tomorrow. I hope it works.

If you only removed heatsink and fan and remounted them, that's about the only possible issue if it worked before. If it still doesn't, it might be related to voltages or too high clock speeds (which shouldn't be the case without OC).

Worked! I'll be getting an aftermarket cooler soon, so the temps. will be even lower.(Right now 61-67°C under load)

Seems alright!
I'm getting 63°C max on my Q6600 on 1.37v (not meant to live that much longer) 3.0ghz (crap chip). with a mugen 4 and mx 4 thermal paste. So you can expect something about that if you intend to slightly overclock your cpu with an aftermarket cooler. Did you settle on one yet? I've heard the Hyper 212 Evo is great for performance/price. Being only ~15€ for almost the performance of a mugen 2b (which is 30€).

Yeah, the Hyper 212 is good, I chose that for my friend's gaming pc build. Someone has offered me a Thermaltake Spinq.(Not the new spinq vt, but the older and better one.) Now that my E8500 is back to normal, time to overclock it again! xD It used to be at 4.1GHz, so I hope I can bring it back to that. Which quad cores(lga775) offer good speeds? Most I've seen where below my dual core(OC)

The q6600 is usually greatly overclockable. Most people were getting it to 3.3-3.6 ghz.
However, even then it can just keep up with the new pentium or a cheap i3. Let alone i5 or i7.
So if you want a really strong improvement over the E8500 you would need to upgrade your mobo.
