Jacques, Alan is quite right. Some of the cold
bluing pastes do give a reasonable finish. But you
really do need to make sure there is no oil or grease
left on the bare metal. If you don't make a good job
of preparing the metal first it will look decidedly
leperous. Then the only way to put it right will be to
emery the whole lot back to bare metal and start again
;-) This is a case where time spent in preparation is
definitely *not* wasted.
I suggest you try it on just one air rifle
first to make sure the result is; a) worth the effort,
and b) what you want. I used this paste on some
throwing knives and they came out a kind of soft matt
grey. Not an unpleasant result, but a long way from a
traditional 'gun blue'. Tough though, because apart
from wearing away on the very tip and the edges it's
lasted many years.
