Happened without warning and I have no idea where to start. Google brings up many different options so I'm unsure which route to take in fear of damaging the PC further.

Any ideas?

Did you get an error code from the BSOD? That would be more useful, if you missed it, it might be in your event viewer as well. To be honest my first thought would be that it's a problem with one or more of sticks of RAM. If you haven't already, try removing each stick of RAM and booting , see if you still get a problem if you do, put that stick back and remove a different one.
