I am a complete novice with I.T.. I'm lucky if I can turn on a tv without instructions (that's actually my wife, but I'm not too far off)...

I'm asking for step by step instructions so I can save my 100+ blu ray movies onto a WD My Passport Ultra 3TB and then be able to plug the drive into the 3.0 usb on my LG 55uh7700 SUHD Smart tv and watch any of them whenever I want from the external drive.

My tv supports Plex if that means anything at all.

Thanks to everyone in advance for trying to give me some I.T. knowledge.

Solution
Not opensource software but I use makemkv, one or two mouse clicks backup the main movie, subs, alternate video streams... and available on linux. I do not believe there is any current software than can decode UHD (4K) discs yet.

For plex you cannot simply plug it into your TV. You need a "server" computer running plex that acts as a media server (aka UPnP server) and does all the heavy lifting.

In your other thread I recommend you get a raspberrypi and run OpenELEC/LibreELEC. Very easy wife/kid friendly. Works out of the box with very little configuration.

*note* most of the developers have recently forked OpenELEC into LibreELEC.

Please ask if you have more specific questions!
