Boinking noise HDD/PSU

Hi

I just recently made a new build using the old HDD and old PSU from my new systems. The components that I use have a lower power than the previous ones inside.

When I started installing windows and booting it frequently I didn't experience the problems I'm experiencing now. Recently now that I finished installing windows whenever I boot it often doesn't recognize the HDD drive. When I boot I hear the PSU giving some sort of power signal (probably to the hard drive) and when it's done with that high pitched signal it starts boinking and I feel pressure coming around the area of the HDD drive. Whenever the boinking occurs, the motherboard will not recognize the HDD. However when there is no boinking the motherboard also doesn't recognize unless I go into the bios. In the bios it still doesn't recognize the card but when I save and exit suddenly the card gets recognised and windows 7 that I installed suddenly boots.

I have 2 sata cables, one for my optical drive and one for my HDD. I tried unplugging the optical drive entirely and it seemed to get slightly better at starting up (the boinking noise seemed less frequent). So I then tried it again with optical drive connected and I tried it like 8 times or so but the boinking between the HDD and PSU doesn't stop. So after this I tried again without the optical drive but even that didn't seem to help since I tried it another 7 times with no success. I have no clue what is causing this at all except that the HDD and PSU seemingly have a conflict with each other. I already tried different SATA cables but it doesn't change the result.

The optical drive and other components always get recognized though.

My new build:
i5-4460
1x 8GB RAM
1x Nvidea GTX 1050
motherboard: MSI H97M-E35
along with the older components:
480 W power supply
HDD Samsung HD103SJ 1TB

I really have no clue what is causing this, any help would be appreciated. This problem appeared suddenly out of nowhere I never experienced this problem before and I didn't experience it when installing windows 7 again or any time except now suddenly. I just hear a power up sound coming from the PSU and then I hear boinking noise with vibrations coming from the PSU and the HDD. The HDD has been used in combination with the PSU for a long time and never showed this kind of behaviour. One last thing the PSU in the past used to ramble a bit on startup making a lot of noise. This would go away after around 10 minutes or on a restart.

Are these signs of a dying PSU that needs to be replaced or is it something else? I'm fairly sure its the PSU since it used to always make a lot of noise coming from a fan of it on startup, after 1-2 reboots the noise would go away.

Many thanks in advance for the help

you are on the right track, pulling one component at a time. though i dose sound like the problem may be with both the hdd and the psu. clicking, thumping and "boinking" sounds usually come from a failing hdd. where a high pitch wines are more common in a failing PSU.

Thanks for the input.

I've taken the HDD out and noticed that it was just a typical clicking noise like the click of death (which means dead hard drive).

I've also looked up the exact speccs of my PSU, the 12V line Amps are too little for the system. This was also the case in my old setup however that I used for around a year without serious issues. I don't know why I didn't run into issues with having too little Amps in the past. I think it might be possible that too little amps have damaged my HDD. I'm probably going to buy a new PSU and 500GB SSD.
