Bong noise when system shuts down, from PSU

Just installed a Corsair HX850 V2 PSU, has coil whine and an odd noise when the system is turned off.

I've heard endless amounts of people with Corsair PSU's having coil whine, so I'm not particularly surprised. However the bong thing, normal or no?

not normal, but not something I would worry about. I have never heard any of my PSUs make that type of noise, but I have had plenty of old audio amplifiers and CRT monitors made it and they all lasted for years without issue.

Does it do that after a normal shutdown? or only when you physically flip the switch?

That sounds like a relay disengaging. I have no idea if the HX850 actually uses a relay inside for something.

It is indeed a relay. It is the bypass relay of the thermistor:

When you power it up, the relay engages and when you power it down, it disengages. Both should make noise, but not identical noises, one is usually louder on a typical relay.

That's normal behaviour for a relay though, and nothing you should worry about. A lot of PSUs don't bypass their thermistors, but that results in slightly lower operating efficiency.

As far as coil whine, is it common for high wattage PSU's to do it? I can't hear it unless my head is pretty close to the case, doesn't seem to change with load, though for whatever reason it whines in time with the movement of my mouse.

My last PSU was a 500w Silverstone one, and I've used a piece of shit no brand 700w one that doesn't do it. If its pretty common I'll just keep it because I've heard of people replacing them over and over and still not getting a good one.

Does it if I shutdown/hibernate/sleep from the start menu too. I don't really care about the noise just wanted to make sure its safe to use.

The relay should disengage any time the PSU goes into low power mode (where only the 5VSB is active, I THINK). So if you sleep (deep sleep), hibernate, restart, or shut down, the click noise should be there.

As for the coil-whine, it is hard to pin point what exact component is causing it. It is usually triggered when a certain device is combined with the PSU in such a way as to make one particular (or more) coil(s) whine. I would suggest, that if the noise isn't excessive (as in, you can bear with it), then forget it. There is no guarantee that a replacement PSU (same model or NOT) won't whine, as it is impossible to test the PSU in combination with every component to ensure the combination won't whine. But typically, these noises in the PSU are faint (faint electrical buzzing noises).

If you are unable to bear with the noise (coil-whine), or if it seems to get worse, you should probably swap it with the manufacturer. Corsair is usually pretty good on support.

Are you hearing the coil whine with the case closed ? The mouse interference noise is very common for onboard audio. Do you hear that interference also from your speakers ? You can usually get rid of some of that noise (not always successful) by wrapping the USB connector end of the mouse plugin with a ferrite (can also work for PSU whine by wrapping the supply rails in ferrites), like this:

Interesting, my mouse doesn't have that, if it becomes too annoying I'll look into it thanks. Always wondered what they were for.
