Hi, i have a slow laptop (Lenovo Ideapad 100S)

It says on Amazon:

Processor frequency: 1.33 GHz, Boost frequency: 1.83 GHz, Processor family: Intel Atom, Processor: Z3735F

So that is a 0.5 GHz boost. Will that make a noticeable difference? (mostly using the web)

How will this affect the battery life, will it cause the laptop to go hot (no fan) and is safe to use permanently?

How do I engage the boost? (never done "clocking" before)

Thanks.

Solution

Boost will engage automatically when in demanding tasks. The user has no control over boost on an atom chip. The atom cpu is very low power and nothing to worry about in regards to overheating.(the chip will throttle back when needed)
I'm pretty sure it will come with the boost automatically enabled, you may not realise much of a difference but it will make one. And with a boost clock such as 1.8GHz +/-, it will not get hot unless used on maximum frequency for hours upon hours, and even after that, I highly doubt it'll be too hot, with it being a low clock rate.

Processors come with boost frequencies to give them a little boost when needed, and are completely safe and will not cause overheating in most cases, laptops obviously run much hotter than desktops, also in most cases. But the CPU in you case will be a low power CPU, so it will not get really hot.

I highly doubt there is something to worry about!

Solution
The Atom Intel Atom Z3735F / 1.33 GHz quad core runs on 4.4W Max TDP so it can't get hot.
The Lenovo IdeaPad 100S comes with 2GB DDR3 RAM, so if you haven't done anything to it, increase the RAM for much better performance, replace the HDD with a SSD and increase RAM to 4GB if Windows is 32 bit or 8GB if it's 64 bit and performance will get a noticeable boost. The CPU performs well for a 1.33 Ghz.. it reaches 909 Average CPU mark on the Passmark benchmarking software...

I've used a Lenovo All-in-One with a 2 core Atom with 4GB RAM that only reaches 701 Average CPU mark and it's moderately fast on the Internet, so what you perceive as slow (acording to the tittle) is the low 2GB of RAM... At least increase RAM and much better if you use a SSD and see a noticeable speed increase.

Thanks for the replies... so it boosts the CPU automatically, don't have to do anything - great!

This laptop can't upgrade the RAM unfortunately. It is soldered right onto the board, no upgrade options as far as I am aware.
