Boosting wireless signal between 2 buildings

We have two neighboring buildings. There is a Netgear router in one, and the wireless is consistent for the computers in that building. Then we have a Belkin extender in the other building, which was working well for 6 months, but now is intermittent or just very slow. I think the foliage between building may be a cause of reduced signal. However, we can't cut down the tree!

I have tried the following to improve the signal:
-moved the router and extender as close to each other as possible.
-downloaded and created a "booster" with aluminium foil & paper for both the router and the extender
-tried to configure an old Belkin wireless N router to act as an additional booster.

Nothing is working. I'm not especially techie, I've just been googling and trying to follow instructions, so perhaps I'm missing something.

Any help is appreciated.

It could be foliage, or it could be interference. Try setting the wireless channel to either 1, 6, or 11. Use one of those (you can try each one to see which is best). Also make sure your channel width is set to 20Mhz, not 40 or auto.
