So my wife's laptop, an HP Omen, suddenly started having this issue after she downloaded some Windows updates before turning it off at the end of the day. She had just been playing World of Warcraft just 10 minutes before the updates and everything was fine. On startup, there is a black screen saying:

Boot Device Not Found
Please install an operating system on your hard disk.

Hard Disk - (3F0)

And then there is the system diagnostics button (F2).

I followed the link given as well and tried the steps listed, but nothing worked. When I open the BIOS startup menu, I see "Incomplete volume member disks" and the main SSD says disabled under status.
I'm not sure what to do here, I'm thinking I might have to do a factory reset, but there are some files on there that we would like to save. And even if we choose to go that route, we can get past the Boot Device Not Found.

Any ideas?

You can download any Linux distro and recover your files. I'd go with Ubuntu or knoppix on a empty flash drive. Mount the hard drive (if you can) and copy all of the files you want to save to a flash drive that has enough space.

First on a working windows pc go download uui (universal USB installer) from pen drive Linux from here

Then go download Ubuntu from here

Or knoppix from here Direct link to .iso file.
Or here mirror page.

Make sure you select the latest EN version for English and that it's the .iso file.

Open uui (universal USB installer) in the working windows pc.

Select the Ubuntu iso file to burn to the empty flash drive.

As shown in the pendrive linux uui download page Uui installer how to pic 1st step

How to pic 2

MAKE SURE YOU SELECT THE CORRECT DRIVE FROM THE LIST. Don't format the wrong drive.

After the boot USB flash drive has Ubuntu loaded on it go into bios on the laptop by pressing the key to enter bios (it's diffrent for each pc).go to where it says boot order and make sure the USB drive is the first bootable drive.

Don't tinker with any of the other settings as it may brick your pc.

After the boot order is changed plug in the USB flash drive into a USB port on the laptop and boot to Ubuntu.

From there you MAY be able to mount the hard drive and load it and access your files. Copy all files you want to save to the USB drive make sure to create a new folder that says "Backed up files" and make sure you have enough space on the flash drive to copy your files. If that doesn't work try one of the other distros from Distro watch

Some distros of Linux are known to cause trouble with things like mp3 players make sure you don't have any peripheral devices plugged in as they can cause them to no longer work.

You can also try ultimate boot CD. Found here

Hope that helped.

So I contacted HP Support and the support agent said it was a problem with the OS and that he would send a repair kit on a USB. But I have my doubts that this will actually help anything. I talked to my wife and she realized the most important files were backed up on Google Drive and on a portable drive. Should we just go ahead and "Reset to Non-Optane" and reinstall everything in the repair kit doesn't work?
