i have spent all day on this without much success

i know that its the harddrive, the bios shows it there and my boot
sequence is as it should in the bios, the drive is set to master as i
believe it should be
i have even done a fresh install of xp and had the tower in bits and
put back together to check all i can think of cables and such

the xp is on one partion but just seems to be missing something???????

you need to run fixboot to write the bootsector
you need to run fixmbr to write the master boot record
You need to run bootcfg /rebuild to create a new boot.ini file.

The website explains the "Recovery Console" of XP and how to access it.It
also has a list of commands.
