I am trying to run OS X Mavericks from a 1TB external hard drive, but can't find an image to download/load on the drive, and don't know how to select the external drive as a boot device.

Solution
- plug in your external hard drive
- run the OS installer
- select external HD as drive to install.
Once the installation process is over
- start the computer and while it's booting hold Option or Alt
- a screan asking you which drive you want to boot from shoot popup

It's exactly the same as installing to the internal drive in your Mac. Just select the drive as the destination drive during installation; it's as simple as that. Another way ist to clone your internal drive to an external one using SuperDuper. Just make sure that the drive is partitioned using the GPT scheme.
