Boot straps?

On one page they mention boot straps....

What actually is/are Boot Straps? I would consider myself having fair knowledge of intel 3 series, yet this is the first time I've heard this term, and the page on which it's mentioned didn't really enlighten me. Is there a good article somewhere on the net detailing the specifics? And is it something one can change, or is it simply 'choosing by itself'? ie. is there a 'iecccpod' switch (I made that name up) that needs to be set to 4 in the bios or is it based on the fsb specified, or on the cpu chip installed?

Having read the straps part. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that means if I were to somehow magically force a 400mhz mode strap without upping the multiplier in the chipset, I should be able to get to archieve 680fsb stable (if my memory wouldn't fail first)?

My p35-ds4 can run 510mhz stable with my e6600. That's at 533 strap (1:1). If I understood right, if I could lower the strap to 400 (4:3) without upping the internal multiplier, it'd run 200mhz instead of 266mhz base meaning I'd have a lot more headroom for overclocking the chipset?

I know this doesn't account for lower max tolerance due to tighter timings, but if nb multiplier could be locked, perhaps so could latencies....

On the other hand, perhaps one could force a 667 strap and lock the timings at 266 and thereby get best performance out of a e6750? the high multiplier of that cpu would mean fsb 360-370 would be the highest needed to get max performance on air cooling....

I've seen the future .... now if just there'd be a <ctrl>+<f2> option to enable strap manipulation on my board .... are there any software tools out there to do that for me? like that 875 tweaker the author's rambling on about?

Edit: Also, perhaps forcing a different strap could mean better oc for slower memory modules (I'm using value ram at pc2-667 running at 375 currently. Perhaps I could get higher with a different strap since the memory multiplier's tied to it...

Yet another edit:
As it seems the board's changing down to strap 800 if one selects a memory speed other than 667 or 800, I wonder if that could be the reason why my best friend's xms memory modules are rubbish? He's got a ga-965p-ds4 board and two 1gb corsair xms modules rated at pc2-8888. We've never been able to let them operate at that speed, highest we got was 1025. Perhaps it has to do with the memory multiplier we choose? Perhaps it at some multipliers drop the strap to 800 which'll cause the motherboard to cease operating.... we'd not notice that, since we know the board will do 430fsb .... perhaps we could run the memory at 667 speed and do 1078mhz on the memory .... at that speed the board should not **** with the strap.... so ironically perhaps clocking the memory faster would solve the problem.... gotta try that next week.

you can't run less than 1:1 on this chipset & that's probably the 1066 strap rather than 533.

I don't know abut the DS4 but the IP35 pro only lets you choose from 800, 1066 & 1333 straps (mind you if the above was true then you are probably meaning the 1333 strap).

The strap's primarily chosen based on the mix of cpu fsb and memory speed right? so if I can choose to run pc2-5300 or whatever they're called I must conclude that it must be able to run a lower strap? perhaps I'm just too tired or dumb to understand right now .... anyhow thanks for the reply.
