Boot_Device LED error code 99 Bios Update? Asus Motherboard

Hey everyone, I keep getting error 99 and a red light on boot_device LED .

I can't get into the bios. Do I need to flash the bios or something?

I don't think it is the other components because the LEDs Are not lighting up.

I am just not getting an image, not getting into the bios

Specs:
4670k i5
Z87 pro mob
8 gig g skill ram
1tb HDD from my last computer
Also 850 watt PSU

Is your boot device your HD? If so, have you tried using the Windows DVD or a bootable USB? Is there a chance your HD has failed? Did you make your recovery DVD? If none of these is an option, you can go to Kaspersky's site and download a Linux recovery system. It had a Linux OS which runs from the disk and gives you access to your windows files. There is even a very useful browser. If you use this disk (which is intended as a temporary OS to run a virus scan) and everything else works then you can be pretty sure that the problem is your primary boot HD. ( It's free! )

this code 99 typically means the motherboard is dead and needs to be replaced. The code is usually seen when the board has either experienced a power surge, or was short circuited. I suggest you try resetting the CMOS to see if that helps by unplugging your power cable from the PSU, pulling the CMOS battery off of the motherboard, then holding the power button for 10-15 seconds. Once you've done this, reinstall the battery, plug the power cord back in, and try to boot. If it still won't work, you'll need to replace the board; if the warranty is still valid, you should be able to get a replacement by following the RMA process from either the place you purchased the motherboard.

This is crap... Everyone is telling me something different. Asus support which sucks btw are telling me it needs a bios update... You guys think it is a failing hard drive, or that it is burnt out which is more crap.

Not to be upset, I appoligize I just want this damn motherboard to work.

Taking your present state of mind in concern I am trying to put this very simply...............

BIOS is a firmware that comes with your mobo integrated and has nothing to do with your optical drives (DVD-R/RW/Blue-Ray/HDD/SSD/...) and the bios screen should initiate even if none of your optical drives are connected. booting into the os or installing one is a complete latter aspect. Now then its definite that there's something wrong with the mobo. As long as Code book says - the error 99 refers to some damage of your mobo. But also you can flash your BIOS as recommended by the ASUS to give it a last try - btw can i know what exactly did you do after which your pc is behaving like this ?

Yea, sorry I was upset last night. I understand that the bios is firmware and the OS and other hardware is different. I am hoping that the bios is corrupt and I can just flash it.

This is my second motherboard with the as problem, I have built computers before I am not new to any of the procedures.

I work from home, and have a lot of work to do. I been going to the library instead. I was hoping to get this done and over with.

I am experiencing the same issue. I tried one stick of RAM, but wasn't able to boot up or get video either. I am using a 4770k, I tried doing the BIOS update, still no go. This is my 2nd motherboard with the same error.

Schwartzshack, Please let me know if you managed to fix this problem. Im having the same problem where on initial boot the computer would go off immediately then start again. My specs seem identical to yours too.

Yea I found out the issue. Error 99 is not actually an error it is shown error 99 when it goes through its initial start-up through the Bios.

Maybe the right pins in your motherboard are not connected, CPU fan not in the right header, or Ram not completely pushed in.

All of these plus could have the computer turn on and turn off again. What error is the motherboard reading? If any at all... I think something is simply unplugged and go back and make sure everything is firmly in its right place.

I know this thread is a year old, but SPEED94, where did you get the information that '99' indicates motherboard damage?
According to the ASUS site, and people in other forum threads, 99 stands for 'Super IO Initialization' and can either be a PCIE issue - such as a component which isn't plugged in properly or isn't receiving enough power - or it can mean no problem if the BIOS is being updated and this is the first time the machine has been powered on. In any case, if there is video signal and the monitor shows the motherboard posting, '99' is not indicating a dead motherboard.
But if you have a source that says otherwise, I would be curious to see it.

i plugged in a PS2 keyboard and it boots fine. Won't boot without it. But it does get me past 99 error (you may have to press and hold the delete key)

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and then decided to reformat my drive and reinstall the OS. After doing this, I ran into this problem. My symptoms were that I could start the computer, but only after 4 or 5 hard resets and the POST would take a long time before it loaded Windows.

For me, the solution was downloading and installing the ASUS AI Suite 3 which can be found on their site under the drivers and tools section located here.

I did not originally find the software because I kept choosing Windows 10 as my OS. I then went into the Windows 8 section and found it. I installed it and my computer boots up extremely quickly now. I am making the assumption that it has to do with the USB 3.0 ports and the drivers but it could be entirely something else. Either way, that worked for me.

I have the same problem , I have Asus Z87 DELUXE/DUAL with I5 4690K CPU, when i connect it in my monitor via HDMI cable (Integrated Graphics) , it does not have signal, my bios version is 2103 , Does anyone know how to fix it?

FORGET HDMI !! You -have- to use VGA (maybe DVI works too, i don't know).
Motherboard is working fine if you see code 99, and you get one long beep, followed by 4 short beeps (and then maybe even one more after a slightly longer pause than between any 2 of those 4). Also, plug in PS/2 keyboard if you have such a thing...
You just don't see it on the screen, but even with error 99 the board is showing ROG logo and everything, just need to press Delete to enter BIOS. My specs:
Asus Maximus VIII Formula
Intel i7 6700K socket 1151
Kingston HX430C15SB2/8 x2 (two separate kits, 16GB total)
Custom watercooling loop

Also no image on screen running from onboard graphics via HDMI. I tested the screen on my laptop and that worked fine....

Turns out it was a faulty HDMI cable. My laptop had HDMI 1.2 or some old version on which the connection to the screen worked, but on my PC it had HDMI 2.0 or 1.4 which did not work with low quality HDMI cable. Replaced HDMI cable and all was good.

Hope this helps some people out.

I had the same problem with my Asus Rog Maximus VIII Hero Alpha, I bought a gold plated HDMI cable from Fry's Electronics,
it gave me the Q-Code 99, I switch to a real good HDMI Gold cable from Sony Play Station 4, and it worked wonders, no more Q-Code 99, booted up Bios, had to make a a few changes in Bios, now I'm up and running Windows 10.

This guy gets it. For me this was not an error at all. 99 did appear on the bios and I did get the beeps and monitor did not display, but it actually did post and everything was fine; all I had to do was unplug the HDMI and connect my monitor through DVI instead (VGA should work too).

If you are reading this, just accept that Code 99 ultimately means "all the things that would have been assigned 3 digits."

Seriously, I have encountered 99 several times; video card failure, depleted keyboard battery, usb kvm switch not flipped, faulty DisplayPort cable, and incorrect hdmi version.

I love my VIII Gene. The multiple 99's I've received all resolved without a change to the board (save the vid card) or BIOS.

The point of my story is don't panic and don't take the cover off your case just yet. Take a deep breath and check I/O. Then check it again.

Its you io just unplug everything but dvi and turn your machine on then plug everthing back in...done.....probably.....it was my fix for my 99 code.

In my case it was the power button short-circuiting!!!!!!!!! I've fix it and all works normally.

Some people just waffle crap about something they think they know. Error code 99. This can be something incorectly installed or you cpu may have a damaged pin or you may have coolant paste or some kind of foreign particle.in your pins. This affects your gpu or any other kind of device from booting. Simple solution start your build from scratch snd ensure all hardware is clean. It worked for me. Ty
