Have an old Dell Dimension dm061 that has a 160 gb HDD with XP on it. I want to put in a new 500 gb HDD. I also want to run Linux on it (for now) and am curious how to put a bootable Linux OS on a CD Rom. Or, can I somehow put Linux on the new hard drive from another PC? Or from a backup drive? The Dell Bios indicates that it will only boot from CD Rom or HDD and not from a USB device. I already tried a flash drive and PC didn't recognize it.
Thanks

Boot and run Linux from a USB flash memory stick

When I download an ISO I get an installer program for Windows. I apparently have to download four ISOs to get the whole package. If I burn the windows installer to disk, will a PC without windows installed boot from the CD?

:??:
What ISO are you downloading and from where?

LinuxQuestions.org Ubuntu 14.10 Click on that and I get four ISOs. As you can tell, I'm not too familiar with Linux.

Get it from here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/download

Ubuntu Desktop
is what you want.

The default ubuntu 14.10 is 1.1GB. It will not fit on a cd-rom. Must be a dvd-rom. For burning ISO use Imgburn. http://www.imgburn.com/
If you have a dvd drive and some blank dvd's then you can just use those.
You can grab the 32bit iso directly here:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/14.10/ubuntu-14.10-desktop-i386.iso
or from a torrent:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/14.10/ubuntu-14.10-desktop-i386.iso.torrent

Most BIOS do not mention support of bootable USB but often will anyway. You must specially prepare your USB drive though!
I use LiLi to make mine when on windows. http://www.linuxliveusb.com

You can choose Ubuntu from the drop down menu and it will do the rest.including downloading the correct iso and check its md5 to be sure it is not corrupted.
Be sure to check the box that says "format key"

When you boot, dont press the BIOS button, but do press the boot selection button [what ever it is ono your machine]
They USB may be listed under HDD's instead of USB devices. This is the case with my computer and many others.

Thanks. Ordered a DVD drive and will use that. May mess around with the USB, though.

Thanks. I'll mess around with the BIOS and booting and see if I can get the flash drive properly coded so it will boot and, meanwhile, I'll wait for the DVD drive I ordered to get here.
