Is it possible to get to safe mode when you use the original XP CD to boot?

No. To get to Safe Mode, repeatedly tap the F8 key as the computer is
starting up. Booting with the XP CD will get you to the Recovery
Console, to the Repair Install, and to a Clean Install.

If you'd like more help, post back with details of the problem, your
computer, and what you are trying to do.

Here is my problem. My laptop crashed after I installed Yahoo online
protection (yes I know that was stupid). The only way I can get it to work is
to unintsall that garbage. Unfortunately I can't get the pc to go into safe
mode. When I try I get a black screen with safe mode in four corners and the
build information across the top. I have given up. I am going to take it to a
data recovery specialist and see if I can get my data back and then do a
clean reinstall of XP pro.

Have you tried Safe Mode Command Line only? If not, do that and see if
you can get a prompt. If you get the prompt, run System Restore:

c:\Windows\System32\restore\rstrui.exe [enter]

Restore to a date prior to your installation of the Yahoo stuff.

Malke,
Thanks for your advice but I took it to a professional. They are going to
try to recover my data but the disk is trashed. There are quite a few bad
sectors and it probably won't reformat. A word of warning...DO NOT INSTALL
YAHOO ONLINE PROTECTION. Please pass it on...

Installing software doesn't physically damage a hard drive. So, maybe the
software corrupted something in Windows, which is entirely possible, and in
which case the drive is physically fine and can be formatted and used.

Or, the hard drive is physically damaged, in which case you need to replace
it, but the software wasn't at fault.

Since I'm not familiar with that particular bit of software, I can't judge
whether it's worth installing or not.

You may be correct but all I know is the laptop was working fine before the
software installation and it bit the dust afterward. The cause and effect
relationship seems pretty clear. As far as physical damage there was plenty.
It had quite a few (a whole lot) of bad sectors.

It's not going to break if you're not using it, but software can't cause
physical damage to a drive. Chances are what happened is that the bad
sectors were already there, but not in use, and the new software tried to
write to those sectors, so now it's apparent that they exist.
