I am currently on a tight budget, have a BnM sata M.2 SSD from my broken laptop with windows 10 installation on it and a computer with a faulty unlicensed version of windows 7. I was looking into sata m.2 to Sata adapters and wondering if it would be at all practical, it would certainly help me save a bit of money and get a system I can use in the interim till I can put something better together.

Yes. It's perfectly fine to use M.2 SATA adapter.
Adapter is compatible with SATA M.2 drives only. Make sure your M.2 drive is SATA.
Will not work with NVME drives.

M.2 is just socket/connector format but SSD for them could be SATA type or NVMe (PCIe) so you must match that what MB or adapter have, What exact SSD is that ?

I've got a kingston Kingston U-SNS8152S3/256GG5 - 256GB M.2 2280 SATA III. Pulled it out of my broken MSI ge72. I was more or less just trying to make sure this is a sata SSD, Kind of confusing for an entry level gentleman like myself.

Yes, standard M,2 configuration with only SATAIIiI protocol (no NVMNE / PCIe) and will work at SATA speeds like any "normal" 2.5" SSD)
As your MB doesn't have any M.2 ports you have an option to use a PCIe to M.2 adapter which would eliminate power and data cables. Example
