Booting Up BIOS First Time, No On-Board Graphics, Can I use GPU?

Hello,

After watching some build videos, I was wondering something.

The board I ordered (Asus M5A97 R2.0) does not have on-board graphics, and my CPU (AMD FX-6300) does not have integrated graphics processing. I am assuming, then, that when I assemble everything and have it ready to boot up for the first time, I would have to have my GPU (GTX 950) hooked up in order to even be able to see anything on the screen.

Is the graphics card usable when I boot up the computer to access the BIOS for the first time? I always thought that expansion cards like GPUs and sound cards needed to have drivers installed in order to be usable... but, is there any basic functionality to the card straight out of the box so I can access the BIOS and get any visual feedback that things are actually happening?

Solution
GPUs have default drivers that don't perform well, but can give you a basic display output. This is built into every BIOS, Windows disc etc.

Remember that the BIOS isn't part of Windows - you install the GPU drivers into Windows, but you can't modify the BIOS.

yes you need a gpu

yes, you will get basic bios function
