So just finished my pc build and I've run into this error on startup. I planned to install and boot Windows 7 from a usb stick but booting from that gives the same error? Any ideas?

What is the boot priority in the BIOS? Do you have USB as priority #1? (Or DVD drive if you're trying that too?) or is it the HDD?

If there's nothing on the HDD, and it's set to priority #1, that can cause it. Or when using your USB, if you havent created a 'bootable' USB, then there's no boot manager for it to find.

I just used my laptop to go through the process of making the usb drive bootable but now it is not showing up under the drives in windows explorer so I can't burn the ISO to the usb.

I'll give this a go then. Also, how do I make sure the OS installs on my hdd rather than accidentally installing to the usb drive, or is that not possible?

While using the USB to install?

You select where to install - so you'd select the HDD/SSD when prompted.

To be safe, made sure you don't have any secondary storage (like the and HDD) attached when you're installing - it removes any potential for error.

OK, using Rufus to automate the process has done the trick. Thanks for letting me know about that.
