Hello ! Im thinking of getting gtx 1080 but i have a Intel Core i5-4440 3.1GHz CPU. My question is will my CPU bottleneck the 1080 too much? I will be playing games like Battlefont 2 and the new call of duty. I currently cant upgrade the rest of my rig so i was thinking of starting with this GPU and then upgrading the rest later. Thank you !

Solution

GTX 1080 is waaaaaaay overkill for 1080p even at ultra-mega-power-settings, even if it was 144Hz or more.

With that card you should be aiming at 1440p, 2k at least as you'll be wasting it's potential with something less than that.

I'd recommend you get, if you're not going to change your current monitor in a good while, a GTX 1060 or GTX 1070. Those will be more than enough to deliver constant 60FPS in any game @1080p

Should be fine, might bottleneck some on CPU demanding games, depends on the game really.

What you have planned is fine, get the GTX 1080 then upgrade the rest later as planned.

My monitor is HP Pavilion 23xi (1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz), my PSU is FSP Raider 650w and i have 16 gb of RAM.I wanted to play on high to very high settings and 60 fps minimum.

Thanks i will see if i can get a new monitor and if not i will probably stick with the gtx 1060 for now.

It's not that much overkill. ;)

I have a GTX 1080 and i7 7700K and use 1080P and have zero issues, I play everything maxxed out.

Just haven't got around to upgrading my monitor yet.

Why would someone get 2 cards instead of one, and a GTX 1060 will bottleneck a fast CPU as it's a mid range card.

If they are going to upgrade anyway.

Makes zero since.

Do you already have that GTX 1060?

No i do not. I have yet to decide if i should get the 1060 or something better.

If you will later wish to upgrade your monitor to a higher res or higher refresh rate, then it's wise to future-proof your rig.
If later you'll be getting a 1080p 144Hz or 1440p 60Hz then the 1070 is plenty
If you wish to go beyond that, get the GTX 1080.

It all depends on your hunger for upgrades. A overall solution if you're not quite decided is to grab a 1070. Won't cost you as much as a 1080 and will still be able to let you upgrade your monitor later on.

Do you want to buy one or 2 GPU's.

If you get a 1060 and then upgrade the CPU etc that GPU will bottleneck the CPU in everything. Stuck at mid range performance forever unless you get a faster card.

However if you get what you said you wanted, the GTX 1080 you have room to grow and once up upgrade the GPU won't bottleneck the CPU because it's fast enough.

There really isn't an overkill thing with GPU's, your CPU is enough to handle the GTX 1080 now and it will perform well.

What GPU do you have currently? You can see if you current CPU will bottleneck by lowering your resolution/graphics settings to the point where the CPU is the limiting factor and see if you're able to get 60 fps. If so, you'll be able to get 60 fps at max settings with a 1080. If you're not able to get 60 fps, then your CPU will bottleneck the 1080.

The problem is in my country we have 1070 cards that cost almost as a 1080.For example earlier today i was looking at a MSI gtx 1070 armor that is only 20 euros cheaper than a palit 1080 gamerock premium. So if i choose to get a better card for the future upgrade of my rig im thinking i should go for a 1080.

Oh, if prices aren't a limiting factor, definitely grab a 1080.
It won't work at it's full potential until you get a better monitor, but that doesn't mean nothing bad, only that you'll have a caged beast ready only to be released when you get a new monitor :p
