Bought a Acer Aspire E5-575G-55KK - m.2 or standard SSD Drive?

Just bought the following laptop:

Acer Aspire E E5-575G-55KK Laptop: 7th Gen Intel Core i5-7200U (2.5GHz) Kaby Lake, 15.6" 1080p LED, 8GB DDR4, 1TB HDD, 940MX 2GB GDDR5

What would be better, a m.2 SSD drive, or perhaps moving the current 1TB drive to the CD Rom blank space with a drive caddy, and getting a traditional SSD drive?

Acer doesn't list it but I had an old Acer and they told me I couldn't connect a second drive but I found a connector in Canada. My 8950G had a second slot but you need a special cable to connect to the mobo and SATA connector at the other end. It's funny because the cable had a Acer part number listed. Acer does that at times as they released the same model in Australia with 2 drives.

I did not find an option, and I did not see anything under device manager either. Will give Acer a call and see if they have an answer.

m.2 would be a far easier solution then having to get a drive caddy for a 2nd drive.

Called Acer, they have no idea what it is for.....told me to go look and download the manual.

From what I can gather, that slot seems to be for a m.2 SSD. That's because there is the Acer Aspire E5-575G-728Q variant of the laptop which uses a Core i7-7500u and it comes with both 1TB HDD and 256GB SSD.

Based on the picture, it seems that "52RJ" version with the i5-7200u lacks a screw mount that would be used to secure a M.2 SSD to the motherboard. If you have a spare M.2 SATA SSD or can get your hands on one, then you can install it and temporarily tape it down to see if the M.2 port actually works.

If it does work, then I suppose you can bring into a laptop repair shop and was if a mount screw can be retrofitted on to the motherboard so that it can be used to secure the SSD. However, this will definitely void your warranty.

The M.2 slot is a PCIe 3.0 x 2 interface. It supports both SATA and PCIe. I just installed a Samsung 960 EVO in my E5-575G-55KK without issues.

Acer does that kind of thing. I have a 8950G which came with 2 hard drive bays. But the 2nd bay used a proprietary SATA adapter. I contacted Acer and they said I couldn't use a second drive in that model. Well the model the sold in Australia came with 2 drives. I searched the world over and found a SATA adapter for the 8943 in England and it wouldn't work with the 8950G. Finally I found an adapter in Canada that actually has an Acer part number. I purchased the cable and a drive cover as the because the other cover would allow the drive to fit. I purchased the machine with the idea to modify. I added an SSD and cloned it then moved the old drive to the second bay and I also switched the wireless card to an Intel.

I have the Acer aspire e 15 e5-575-33bm

m.2 drives come in three different lengths. The picture you uploaded looks like it HAS the set screw and holding srcew in the 3rd/longest position, the connector is at the top of the photo.
