Just bought HL2 tonight and fancied playing it straight away. And it's
just dawned on me that I bought the DVD ROM version, and I don't have a
bloody DVD ROM drive - duh!

So, I've already got Steam from HL1, can I just enter the key and it'll
work without the DVD? I've already found the "Register a product I
already own" bit.

Reason I ask is because I don't want to remove the shrink wrap if it
won't work - so I could at least refund/exchange it.

Oh yeah, does it download the whole 4.5 Gb? That's gonna take 22 hours I
think :-/

The way I understand it is to play without a disc is two(2) different ways.

1st is:
You buy any retail version either the dvd or the cd(s) versions and in order
to play it you have to download it first like with any store bought retail
game and then after downloading the patch(s) then you can play without the
disc.

2nd is:
Since you have an account with Steam already you can buy one of the
HL2(bronze,silver,gold) packages that Steam has and of course after
downloading whatever you need to from Steam then you play without a disc
because there isn't a disc when buying the game from Steam online.

if its still in the shrink wrap either take it back to shop for a
swap/refund
or get a DVD drive which is the better option as more games are coming
on DVD now.

DVD drives are fairly inexpensive. It may be time for you to upgrade as
this seems to be the way that game companies are going (also a great
excuse).

The download is a LONG slog. Next time I'll buy the disk.........

Yep. DVD Drive $25-$30. Check out this Lite-On for $25 + $4 shipping

Cheaper than most games you'll buy and easier to install than Half-Life 2.

A friend of mine tried this while we were attempting to get around his
"hl2.ico error 1334" problem (before we realised that the problem was to
do with CS:S), and Steam wouldn't accept it - told us to run the Game's
installer.. So I would be wary of trying to do this.

Yes,

You can use the existing Steam setup and feed it the installation key. Once
that is done you can select which of the games you want to download.
Hopefully you have broadband.

FWIW: the "non-dvd" (called Standard Retail or Bronze download) version is
licensed for fewer of the add-on downloads. For example, it won't allow you
download DOD:Source or Half-Life:Source whenever they become available Your
version has all the goodies plus the additional merchandise (hat, books...).

Keep what you've got and download the stuff rather than worry about the DVD
drive.

He's in the UK, so chances are he has the Standard retail version.
There's no CD Version in the UK.
