So after almost 10 years of using my trusty old Philips 220WS, a 22'' 1680x1050 TN panel, I decided to get a fullHD IPS monitor, as I've been into photography more than gaming lately, and I thought I'd benefit from the better color, and wouldn't miss the fast response times as much. Dell was the brand I heard had great monitors, so I went with the S2340L; It's a simple, nice black design, glossy screen (better for color, or so I've heard).

And After using my new Dell for 3 days now, I seriously can't believe that in 10 years time the technology could have actually gotten WORSE.

The color is maybe 10% better on it, but everything else is a huge step back; The built quality feels cheap, the contrast is worse (and the contrast slider does nothing but change the brightness), and the flickering.... I'm speechless. What I missed in my research was the whole LED PWM flickering issue. As my old monitor never had these issues, I never thought to check for this.

Here's an example compared to my almost 10 year old Philips:

I could live with everything else, but the flickering is so bad it hurts my eyes, and I have no choice but to return the monitor and exchange it for another one. So I could really use your help, as I understand there are some real display experts here.
Basically what I'm looking for is an 1080p black IPS monitor 22-24'' with NO flickering, and preferably a lower response time (8ms or less). Both glossy or matte is fine. What I don't need is the USB, speakers, tilting options, etc... just the best screen I can get for the money. HDMI/DVI is fine.
I'd use it for photography (photoshop/lightroom) and occasional gaming.

So which of the following models would you choose as the best? (these are the ones the shop has, so they're to one's I can choose from in my price range).

Big thanks in advance.

I think the issue is that you went for a cheaper Dell. The Dell UltraSharp models are always in the top marks for reviews. Priced higher though, yours is $157 on Amazon, the UltraSharp Uxxxxx models start at about $200 for a refurbished 23" one http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Widescreen-UltraSharp-Multimedia-Refurbished/dp/B015VRUV1E/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1447172089&sr=1-2&keywords=dell+ultrasharp&refinements=p_n_size_browse-bin%3A3547805011

A good quality IPS screen in the 24" + size will be about $300+
