I'm planning on building and overclocking my new PC after I get home from school in a few weeks. I've been ordering the parts a bit at a time and just realized that I accidently bought the GIGABYTE GA-965G DS3 instead of the 965P. From what I've read the onboard graphics makes it bad for OC'ing. Since its my first time overclocking I was only hoping to get my DC E4300 up to around 2.2-2.4ghz. Would this still be possible or am I out of luck?

Thanks in advance!

I have built both the 965P and the 965G. I'm not sure how Anandtech came up with these results.

First off, I don't have the 965G board. However 2.2-2.4 is a mild overclock, I don't think you should have problems reaching that. If you turn off enough unnessary stuff in the BIOS it would, to my thinking, be enough.

Or you could call up whoever you ordered from and tell them you goofed and need to setup an RMA. Might be easier in the long run to get the board you wanted.

i dont see that article covering oc'ability

Overclocking ability of what? The 965P or the 965G? The article shows performance of the two chips. The 965G is a micro board chip used in conjunction with onboard video. The 965G is the Intel chip for micro boards that support PC6400 800 mhz. 945G (the prior Intel micro chip) supports up to PC5400 667 mhz. From my experience, the 965G MB's are poor overclockers when compared with the ATX 965P boards. I returned my 965G board for a 965Q board, but have not assembled it yet.

Thanks for the advice guys. I had the parts shipped home since I'm at school and don't want to ship them twice so I'll just stick with what I've got. Thanks for all the advice though and sorry I didn't reply for awhile. Its been a busy week school wise and I was kinda out of it for awhile. Thank you Forumz posters!
