I ordered a new GTX 970 reference design from BestBuy. Today I picked it up then uninstalled my previous GPU drivers (gtx 660 ti) turned off my PC and installed the 970 into my case. When I turned on my computer I saw this while the computer was booting up
I initially thought that it was a driver issue and it would be resolved when I installed the new driver downloaded from the Nvidia website. That was not the case and the problem persisted.
My next thought was that it may have been a lack of power to the GPU. My computer specs are as follows;
CPU: intel i7 4790
PSU: corsair ax860
RAM: 16 gb corsair vengeance
MOBO: ASUS Z97-A
As you can see my PSU is a modular one so I connected another PCI cable and hooked 2 PCI's up to the 970 like it requires so I ruled out the possibility of a power failure.
My next thought was that it was a conflict in drivers sitting around in the registry from the old GPU to the new one. To save myself some time, I formated my hard drive and did a fresh install of windows 7 64-bit. When I booted however the problem seen in the image above still persisted.
I then thought the pci slot on the mother board may be corrupted in some way, so I tried both of my other 2 pci slots rebooting each time and the problem persisted.
I was kind of worried so I put back in my old GPU(660ti) and the computer started up with no graphical errors, just low resolution because I had no drivers.
So those are the steps I have taken so far. A few things to note are that the GPU lights up and does its thing, and the fan is spinning on the GPU. In addition to this when the 970 was installed the Device Manager displays the error code 43 which brings be to believe the card is just dead.
Any insight you guys have to share is appreciated. Has anyone had a similar problem with a 970? How can I tell if the GPU is dead? What are possible causes of a GPU to fail/die? Is it possible that the distributor just gave me a bad card? And if so how often does that occure.
Thanks
