When my PC is on, the HDD makes a sort of syncopated groan.

I know this is the HDD because it doesn't groan when I unplug the cables from it.

I want to know if this is a normal thing or if my hard drive is defective and about to go kaput.

The HDD in question is a WD Black 2tb, and my case is a NZXT s340 Elite.

My issue didn't sound like anything on that list, nor did it sound anywhere near as violent.

I have watched some youtube videos of hard drives and as it turns out the sound I was hearing is normal operation. My new pc is just really quiet overall.

mrfalme1, yes, HDD's will produce noise a certain level of noise. If yours was not on the link I sent then you should be fine. Nevertheless, having a good back up plan is essential.

The conventional wisdom by tech experts on backups is known as the 3-2-1 method.

Basically you want:

3 copies of any data you don't want to lose
2 different mediums it's stored on
1 copy kept offsite, to prevent against disaster.
