Hi there,
My laptop's old hdd was making click noises very frequently. It also gave rise to the 100% disk usage error. So i replaced the old one with 500 gb Hitachi (7200rpm) 2 days ago.

I installed Win 8 from the dvd i had and it ran well.

But today suddenly i happened to notice a strange sound generated from the new hdd. It 1st occurred less frequently. Now the frequency has increased. So i tried putting my ear against the hdd for a few minutes.

The sound i heard was very much alike to the sound of an accelerating dirt bike. But very low in volume. More like screeching but very subtle. Every time it lasts for about 3-4 seconds.

I had some faulty driver installations yesterday which i've already gotten rid of. As for now i only have photoshop and illustrator installed, kmplayer, maxthon browser, chrome and some very much needed drivers.

Please give your views.Should I be worried?

Welcome to the community, abinro!

I'd strongly recommend you to backup any important data from your newly installed HDD and copy it somewhere else (an external, online cloud storage, etc.) Afterwards, you should go to the HDD manufacturer's website and find their brand-specific diagnostic tool in order to test the health and SMART status of the drive. Unfortunately, the noises could be indicating internal physical damage that might not get picked up by the utility itself, so I'd just advise you to consider replacing it. You should also check the connections, improper mounting of the HDD could cause additional vibrations that can also SOUND concerning.

If it's properly seated inside your laptop and the noises still persist, you...
Hmmm...in my experience, the HDD should be running quietly with sounds that are more akin to a higher pitched rpm sound...a "velvet whir" so to speak. If it is grumbling, then there might be an issue. I am no expert by any means, but I would start by troubleshooting the error situation from your previous HDD, for there may be something in your system that isn't playing well with HDDs. Also, there is the chance that your new HDD experienced shock in shipping which may have knocked the inside askew enough to create an increasing issue mechanically.
There is probably more than I am thinking about (or have knowledge of), but I would start by researching what may have caused the first HDD to fail, for that could be what is causing your troubles now.

Hope this was helpful. Keep us posted! :)

Thsnk you SuperSoph_WD.

That is somewhat helpful. I will immediately check out if there is a mounting issue.
But i would like to inform you that the hdd has now stopped making those sort of noises. And i still have a couple of days in hand to monitor the hdd before the replacement time runs out for amazon.

Backing up won't be necessary as i haven't placed any thing of importance in this new drive yet.

Thank you again!!!
