Brand new pc build switching on and off

Just built a new pc and it powers up for 10 seconds then shuts down. It just repeats this cycle until i press it off. Everything seems to be in the right place. Motherboard is fitted nicely and the cpu cooler has fitted fine onto the cpu. Power SW, Power LEDs, Reset,...etc... all on the right pin.

Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H motherboard
Intel i5 3570K processor
Zalman Z9 mid tower case
Corsair DD3 Dominator ram 8gb
Seasonic 750 Watt M12II Bronze ATX PSU Power Supply
Intel Socket LGA 1155 CPU cooler heatsink with fan OEM
1 TB Barracuda HDD
SATA HD DVD Bluray rewriter

It stopped booting up so i took out the battery and put it back in. It then booted up but repeated this cycle.

I hope it's not the cpu. It's the motherboard or the cpu i think. This psu should power everything up with no problems. Do i need to update the bios to support this cpu? I'm guessing i do with this motherboard. If it doesnt the cpu is probably dead.


I have tried each stick of ram and tried narrowing it down to one and it still has the same problem. It isn't a DIMM slot.

The cpu fan spins briefly then stops and the big fan at the back of the case keeps spinning but then stops after 10 seconds and repeats the cycle. The fan in the front does not spin at all when connect to sysfan 1. Lights come on the case and mouse.


Just ruled out the psu. It does the same with another working psu. The front fan led comes on when i turn it on but shuts itself off and recycles

Take it all out of the metal case and build it on a smooth flat surface, wood, glass etc. Then try starting it up. Im betting somewhere you are shorting out.

This MOBO has the classic 24 pin power connector and another 4 pin connector near the VGA output, are you possitive that one is connected too?

The CPU cooler must be connected where it says "CPU FAN" not "SYS FAN" this is imortant cos they look exactly the same.

All i can think so far.

Also check the bios jumper is it on the right possition.

Yeah. The CPU cooler is in the CPU FAN. the 4 pin cable is in the right power connector and the 24 pin power connector is in.

I will try and take it out of the case and attempt to boot it up.

Just tried this and im still having the same problem.

I'm going to try a different case. Maybe the power cable from the case if faulty. If not it's either the motherboard or the cpu. Or a poor cpu cooler. I'm guessing it's the cpu.

i'd blame the mobo first is more likely to see a faulty mobo than a falty proccessor, but it can happen too.

When i bought the processor it came in anti static pink bubblewrap but it was just sent to me in a letter. The motherboard was sent to me brand new but it might be DOA. I think the only way i would find out is if i used a different cpu in this motherboard.

Yeah or that processor on a different MOBO, but i think you have done enough as a customer, i would RMA both mother and processor and let them test and decide which one is broken.

I'm going to try to put the motherboard back into the case one more time and if it doesn't work this time i will RMA both. Or try and get a refund which i doubt i will get.
