Hi.
I recently bought an Xbox one controller. I don't own an Xbox. I've always been a PlayStation guy, but I wanted a controller for my Windows 10 pc. The first controller i got, had some drifting issues on the right controlstick, so i returned it to the store. The second one, which i have now, have the exact same problem. I read online that controlstick drifting is very common among heavy used controllers, but these are brand new. Am i doing something wrong? Do i need to calibrate it somehow, or is this just the way Xbox controllers are meant to be? I really don't want to have to return yet another controller bacause i live pretty far away from the store.

Regards,
Arne Kurtsen

No chance you know anybody with a laptop you could bring with you to the store?

If after a 2nd time, I would certainly want to look at different stores, or get the one you are shopping at to somehow verify the product before going home with it.

I assume you are able to visually verify that you are not being given the same controller back? Some stores put returned merchandise back on the shelf as new, until it comes back several times.
I can't say for the XBox One controller. I've used the same XBox 360 controller for nine or ten years now. I've never had the problems you're describing. Perhaps I'm just lucky.

Here's how to calibrate a controller. It should be the same for XBox Once controllers.

I tried the guide you suggested. Unfortunately i didn't fix it. Btw the controller is the Xbox one S wireless version if it's any help.

- Is this a genuine MS XBox One controller or cheap third party model?
- Do you have any other controllers installed? Try disconnecting them.
- Just for the heck of it. Try unplugging your keyboard and mouse when gaming. Just in case it is getting some erroneous input.

There is no calibration for an XBox One Wireless controller on Windows 10. It really is just plug, wait for drivers to download, and play.

Since this is the second controller that you're having the issue with, I would suggest trying the controller on a different PC. Also, upon initially plugging the wireless receiver in (unless you're using a Bluetooth model,) and pairing the controller, make sure you aren't fiddling with any of the buttons or sticks, in case the controller does happen to perform an internal calibration or zeroing process that it doesn't make apparent.

If you are using a Bluetooth model, try the controller by itself, without any other Bluetooth devices being active.

It's an official Xbox one controller made by Microsoft. I don't have any other controllers, and i've already tried to remove all my other devices. Maybe I'll have to return to the store yet another time.

I don't have any other computer running Windows 10, but i could try it out on Windows 7 with a USB cable. Also, it is a bluetooth model and I'm not touching any buttons when connecting it.

Not all Bluetooth radios and Bluetooth software stacks are made equal. Both of these are variables you may need to deal with if you can't find a controller that doesn't exhibit drift on your particular computer system.

I would definitely try the controller on the Windows 7 system. The cable should eliminate any effect Bluetooth connectivity should have on the controller.

I tried the controller on my Windows 7 system with a USB cable. It was the same problem, then i tried it on my Windows 10 computer with the USB and the same thing happened. It must be a physical problem with the controller, although it seems weird that i would get two broken controllers in a row.

It does seem weird to find two controllers in a row that are exhibiting drifting. Perhaps the shop you're buying from got a bad batch of controllers?

Have you tried multiple games with the controllers? Perhaps there are settings within your game(s) that can be adjusted, such as a dead zone for the thumb sticks?

I've tried Left4Dead 1 and 2, Portal 2 and Project64. It's the same in every game. I guess i have to give up and return it, maybe i'm lucky this time.

The second i controller had a sticker where you would open it. I think i'm goin to get my money back and pick a different store this time. Thanks for all your suggestions.
