TotalCon was a success! We held 3 tournaments.

Here's the Cliff's Notes version:
Friday - Matt Morgan wins
Saturday - Robyn Tatu wins the Northeast Regional Qualifier
Sunday - DJ Chagnon wins the KMW/FN draft with Followers of Set
Fun was had by all,
and Peter Bakija quakes in fear in the face of a Choir deck.

Deck Name : Calling Demented Voters
Author : Matt Morgan
Description : Combat defense? Who needs combat defense? Vote push?
That's for wimps. Stealth? That's for people who want successful
actions. I built this one in the hopes that the amount of stealth
could handle even heavy intercept decks (Forgotten/Elder being the main way
to do so). I was also obviously hoping not to be rushed. I got really
lucky in that regard as I never sat next to a rush deck, but many times I had
a predator who couldn't go forward due to a lack of minions. In fact,
in both the first round and the final I rescued my predator from torpor
several times to keep the ol' meatshield alive (I'm lucky nobody ever
decided to cut the middle man and rush me directly).

Looking at the deck, one might wonder how this or that card worked out.
Most of the time, I couldn't tell you. I've recently developed this
extremely minimalist playing style where I'll play like 20 cards all
game.
The deck is 90 cards by force of habit, but I never even came close to
playing that many. I guess it worked out okay this time, but it
would've been nice to see the Jake, Gambit Accepted, Momentum's Edge, etc.
Never got a chance to play any of those.

This tournament was two preliminary rounds and a final. I got 4VPs at
the first table as I couldn't prop my predator up long enough to get the
sweep. Then I swept my second table to get top seed on the finals. I
made the obvious choice to sit away from the combat decks at the table.
I spent much of the game trying to keep my predator alive so I wouldn't
get rushed by Euro-Brujah. Then I drew the 3 KRCs I needed to oust my prey
just after the Euro-Brujah ran out of steam and died. My new prey, a
!Nos rush deck, very nearly got his second VP for the win, but I was saved
by the two hour time limit.

Sunday's "tournament" was rather informal.
We had 17 participants. 7 players chose Final Nights starters, and 10
players chose Kindred Most Wanted starters.
Each player drafted 3 Kindred Most Wanted boosters and 2 Final Nights
boosters.
The final round, not pre-planned, ended up with one of each of the Final
Nights starters represented: Ben Peal's Ravnos, Ben Swainbank's Assamites,
Jared Strait's Giovanni, and DJ Chagnon's Setites.
I don't have an Archon file for this one, and can't remember who the fifth
finalist was, unfortunately

DJ Chagnon won the event; I don't know if he has a deck list available.

Thanks to all who came to TotalCon, and I hope to see you all at our
Qualifier next year!

Josh Josh Josh. Do I mean so little to you? 🙂

I was the fourth-seed finalist, playing a KMW Anathema starter. I'd
modified it pretty substantially by pulling out most of the fat vampires who
weren't Count Germaine (since he's the only guy in the whole crypt who can
play everything), and some of the library cards that seemed less useful, and
replacing them with a bunch of Ravnos (I think I ended up with 6, including
Alexis Sorokin and Mata Hari) and a couple Setites. I should have pulled
the Potence cards too, as I forgot that by removing the Marcus Vitels, I was
down to just Germaine, Wolfgang, and Rabbat being able to play the Potence
stuff, and Rabbat would very rarely be able to actually do so (or want to).

Anyway, the finals was seated:

Ben was ranked first going in. Jared was second I think. Jared bled me for
like a million and one, but I kept Blood Dolling off and trying to block and
Ben Peal lent me intercept sometimes from his London Evening Star. I was
never able to do anything much to Ben, he always had intercept when I tried
(which was, like, twice, right before I got ousted). I lived longer than
Jared though, he did get one good bounce of DJ's bleed on to me, but wasn't
QUITE able to bleed me for enough more to nail me before DJ's stealthy
bleeds got him. Then Ben Peal got Ben Swainbank with, uh, a bunch of bleeds
for 1 I think, and of course the ability to out-combat him with Fortitude
(when the damage wasn't unpreventable). Then I am told that DJ won the
endgame, thanks largely to Crocodile Temple, and probably also the 6-pool
advantage. (I was already on my way to the airport when the game ended so I
didn't witness it myself.)

Congratulations to the other finalists, and the winners of the other
tournaments - rock on, Boston.

I won't quote the full report here. Go back and read it on google or
something if you missed it. I just thought it was interesting how Robyn
and I each won a final with a Maris deck. Hers was a lot more fighty and
intercepty than mine and mine was more stealthy and bloaty. I didn't do
much handing out intercept and she didn't in the finals at least (not sure
about the other rounds). Strong vampire, even if you aren't going for 9
intercept on a single action.

Peter's comments about how he was beaten down by combat really underscores
how lucky I was to not get rushed that much with my soft and squishy
decks. I actually ended up benefiting from other decks being stacked too
high with combat defense and either not being able to hit me hard enough
or not being able to deal with my stealthy votes and nigh-everpresent vote
lock.

Here's a brief summary of my games. I don't recall who went first at any
of the tables, so I'll just put myself last.

Friday, round 1:

Jared discarded a Fast Hands early, which I'm sure sent chills down Eric's
spine. Jared got out a few !Brujah with CEL, got guns and started putting
the hurt on Josh. Josh got Isabel and some smaller Giovanni, tried
bleeding me a little and was soon reduced to having to spend most of his
time rescuing vampires from torpor and protecting his Famed guy. I played
cautiously early on because I was worried about Nik beating me to vote
lock and was worried Josh would die too soon and Jared would start tearing
into me.

Nik got a Ventrue Headquarters and some Progeny out, but I was able to hit
him with a couple KRCs, putting the odd point on Josh, just to keep him
honest. Eric didn't do much until Nik hit his patch of KRCs. After the
game, he said his deck didn't have very many, but at the time it seemed
like he was made of them. With his Ventrue HQ, he could pass them easily
enough, but I was glad the HQ was always tapped on my turn. I had out
Maris and merged Quentin King III (what a combo!) by that point.

Eric decided he'd had enough of the KRCs and Germaine started rushing
backward. Josh was seriously ailing and I helped him out with a rescue or
two, but it was clear he wasn't going to be around for long. I found my
own patch of KRCs and managed to oust Nik, foiling the Ventrue
Headquarters + Lucinde anti-vote with a Telepathic Vote Counting. I
brought up Marie Faucigny to suppliment my forces (mainly because I knew I
was about to be rushed).

Eric did rush me and then bled a little, torporizing one of Jared's
minions when he was blocked. Unfortunately for Eric, Germaine's gun was
soon stolen by Jeremiah Noble. Then Jared ousted Josh with bleeds for 1
and Dragonbound and soon Jeremiah was rushing me with that same Assault
Rifle!

I was drawing plenty of damaging votes by this time and I soon ousted
Eric. Jared made a mighty effort to bring down my mighty Malks, but
couldn't draw enough rush and I ousted him with a Reins of Power and some
stealthy bleeds.

Friday, round 2:

This time I got out Rachel Brandywine and Maris, then Quentin King III.
Ben blocked all my actions, so I couldn't The Call or anything, but I drew
two Blood Dolls early and was able to keep my head above water because of
it. Ben got Owain and Blackhorse Tanner and had some crazy Desert Eagle
with a Scattershot Magazine tech. Matt got small Tremere and !Tremere and
a Succubus and Nephandus. Paul brought out Igo, Anson and Jost. Gary got
some small and midcap Setites. He wasn't happy to see Maris as the
smallest vampire in my ready region.

I was mostly biding my time as that Antideluvian slowly ate away at Ben's
pool. Ben eventually Eagle's Sighted Matt's allies and killed them,
leaving Matt without much offense. Gary put several Corruptions on Maris,
but didn't get his needed Revelation of Desire. He bled me for 1 a few
times and I bounced to Ben who mostly took them, wanting to save his
bounce and intercept for me.

My chance came when Paul called a KRC with 2 damage on Gary and 2 on Ben
(I had vote lock, so he obviously needed to deal with me). I played a
Dreams of the Sphinx and drew just enough stealth on my KRC to oust Ben
with my first successful action of the game. After that, I pretty much
just cruised around the table with no difficulty as nobody else had
intercept or rush actions or anything like that which might impede my
progress. I think Gary got me kind of low at the end when he finally drew
his Revelations of Desire, but I ended up having enough vote and bleed
power to oust him.

Friday, Finals:
I had only a dim idea of what the other decks at the table did. In fact,
I misjudged Matt Flint's deck as an intercept deck rather than a rush
deck. Anyway, I figured Jonathan would make a nice grandpredator as he'd
keep my predator busy. I was sure right about that.

I believe I got out Rachel and Marie or QK first in this game. Nobody
tried to stop my Calls, so that made the early game much easier. Robyn
influenced up Owain and Lazverinus, leaving me to wonder how much
intercept she was packing and whether I'd made a mistake. Matt got
Teresita, Christianus Lionel and Beast. Jonathan got Donal, Theo (adv?)
and Volker. Nick got Gratiano and started Governing out some smaller
Lasombra.

Thanks to early Dreams transfers, I managed a fast Parity Shift for 5 on
Robyn before the table had the votes to stop me. Then I drew nothing
useful for a long, long time. Robyn only bled Matt when she wanted to
clear her hand of offense. She was rightfully concerned about my deck.
Matt was playing combat and was stuck between Lazverinus and the
Euro-Brujah. Ouch! An early exploratory bleed got Beast Disarmed.

Jonathan put the hurt on Nick from the get-go. I secured a promise that
Nick wouldn't bleed me "just to cycle" or anything and set to work proping
him up and rescuing his torpid minions. Jonathan's onslaught was just
brutal, but Nick managed to cling to life turn after turn. Eventually it
became apparent that Jonathan had run out of good combat for a while and
Matt got a lot more aggressive. He cleverly had a bleed bounced and put a
Spying Mission on Nick for later use. He contested Fame with Jonathan and
eventually ousted him with superior (by then) combat and some bleed
retainers.

I got a precious Dreams of the Sphinx and suddenly my hand was full of
KRCs and stealth cards. Robyn managed to block and torporize Hannibal,
but I ousted her anyway. Then as the clock ran down, I gave Nick three
pool with an Ancient Influence, used Hannibal's special to send Beast
hunting and hoped he'd hang in there. Matt had too much pool for me to
even try to oust him in a single turn. As it turned out, Matt managed to
bleed Nick down to 1 but couldn't get the last pool. Then time was called
before Nick finished his turn.

Saturday, Round 1

Scott looked scary early on, but had trouble with the right combination of
guns, rush actions and Psyche!s. He did rush me once, but I had one of my
precious few Majesties in hand and he had no Psyche! I got out some
titled !Toreador and made some Creation Rites. Jared knew he had no real
defense against my deck, so he bled Pat a lot, who in turn was hurting
Lance quite a bit.

Lance was jammed on stealth and asked if he'd mind if I let him cycle some
in burning my Foundation Exhibit. Since there were no other titles on the
table, I had no problem with it and eventually Nehsi was merrily Enticing
away and Scott was in trouble. I ramped up my offense and drew some KRCs.
Lance, who was very low on pool by this point, said if I'd put some KRC
damage on Scott (so that he could oust him with an Enticement), he
wouldn't try to oust me until after I ousted Jared. I agreed and tried to
oust Jared, confidently putting the odd point of later KRCs on Pat.
Unfortunately, I misjudged something or other and Jared got another turn
and just barely ousted Pat.

At that point my deck hit something of a dry spell and Jared was hurting
Lance. He tried to convince Lance to attack me anyway and made some good
arguments, but Lance felt he needed to keep the deal. For my part, I
wouldn't have blamed him too much either way. Anyway, I did manage to get
Jared before he could oust Lance and then I finished Lance off with some
Palla Grande bleeds or something.

Saturday, round 2:

Nik terrified the table by flipping 4 1 caps on his first turn. Sadly for
him, his first Praxis Seizure was blocked. For my part, I guess I decided
to find out how stupid I could be. I had Greta and Donatien in my
uncontrolled region and for some reason decided to go for Donatien first.
I congratulated myself on how clever I was when Kevin flipped up Greta as
his first minion. Then I snuck a peek at my uncontrolled region to see I
had five blood on Greta, not Donatien! I'd nearly paid 2 extra pool to
contest cross-table!

I decided to compromise and get out Venere. Of course, that meant I
didn't even have a minion in the game until the end of my 4th turn. Doh!
Lucky for me, Stephen wasn't a big bleeder. Still, I couldn't afford a
second minion at all and just had to pull my pool back off Greta. I made
some Creation Rites, but it was slow work and Stephen was hitting me for 1
or 2 per turn.

Nik was having a really rough time of it. Every turn he'd call votes with
all his minions, get blocked and sent to torpor most of the time. Then
he'd influence out more. I think he must've gotten most of his crypt out.
A Dragonbound would've ousted him instantly. Nik never managed any table
votes, so my Venere could pretty much command him when he wasn't blocked.
That was nice and made up the bulk of my early offense against Gary.

Once I had three Creations, I drew into the KRCs I needed to oust Gary,
but Stephen just Delayed me. Gary ousted Nik. Kevin was putting a lot of
pressure on Stephen by then. Eventually everybody ran out of Delaying
Tactics and I ousted Gary around the time Kevin ousted Stephen.

The endgame was pretty hysterical as the only way I could keep myself in
the game was to call Consanguinous Boons which gave us both lots of pool.
Also, Kevin's Palla Grande probably hurt him more than it helped him. I
decided it would be better just to not play mine. I ended up playing
Golconda on Venere and got Donatien out. Venere was a 10-cap at the time
with two Obfuscate masters and I used a Dreams to accelerate Donatien's
arrival, so I actually made 3 pool and exchanged an empty minion for a
full one in the bargain.

Kevin and I both decked ourselves and I attempted to withdraw on every
turn. Kevin fought hard for the table win, but eventually let me withdraw
with just a couple minutes left in the game. I still had something like
15 pool, so he wasn't likely to oust me in the last couple minutes.

Saturday, round 3:

All that combat finally caught up with me. I brought up Greta, and Peter
Havened her and dropped by to say "Hello!" Greta managed to avoid torpor,
but she had to hunt as her first action and you'd better believe I burned
the Haven as my second. I also got Venere leaving a 15 pool cushion.

Having learned I was all soft and squishy, Peter turned his attention to
Jay and Famed Christianus Lionel, putting Jay on the defensive early.
This allowed Andy to get out Constanza, Theo and Donal and bleed me with
Domiante cards for a lot. I was dying very quickly. I rescued one of
Jay's minions in the hope that he could rebuild and pressure Andy. He did
in fact block one of Andy's superior Governs, but that just convinced him
he was better off using them to bleed me. Not sure if I accomplished
anything else before dying.

Andy then got Beast and Peter seemed like he was jammed on something not
so good. Andy's combat made short work of Peter's minions and he quickly
joined me as spectator of the game.

After that, Andy sort of ran out of steam. It looked like things could go
either way for a while, but Jay held on and as their libraries dwindled,
Jay started to look stronger (lots of permanents) and Andy was getting
weaker. Eventually Jay's ranged combat won out over Andy's Signposts and
Jay picked up the last two VPs.

Saturday, finals
With 1 GW and 5 VPs, I was 5th seed and had no choice of where to sit.

Unfortunately, nobody ever really got the upper hand for long in this
game. I had a very hard time moving against Robyn due to Maris + Second
Traditions. After I saw her give as good as she got in a fight with
Johnathan, I wasn't very much inclined to get blocked, especially since I
wanted to save my Majesties for the Hordes. Jonathan was again very
aggressive and hurt Jared a lot early, but Jared managed to Entrance Ben's
Ambrosius, who ended up making a superb defensive player for Jared's team.
Jared also had oodles of combat defense and could generally take what
Jonathan was dishing out.

Despite the savaging he was facing, Jared managed to bleed Ben pretty
heavily, which is probably the only thing that kept Ben from taking me
down with his Hordes and bleeding me out. Ben did get a few good bleeds
on me, but never rushed with his Hordes as he needed them as blockers
against those bleedy Daughters.

Over two hours the balance shifted a lot with Jared on the ropes one
minute and Ben nearly ousted the next. Each player managed a nice
recovery. I never had a good opening against Robyn and she didn't have a
good one on Jonathan. Ben did get me below 10 pool, but I was holding a
Golconda for emergencies, so I probably would've been able to save myself
if I had to.

We hit the time limit with nobody ousted, so Robyn won based on her
preliminary standing.

I might share the goofy Sunday games at a later date, but I think this
message has been long enough. In all, I had a really great time and look
forward to the next big VTES event. For me, that'll probably be Origins
unless someone tries really hard to talk me into going to something else.

Yeah, it was kind of crazy. I'd have expected that in the qualifier,
there would be a lot more decks like yours--squishy ones that are good
at getting VPs (that my deck was kinda maximized to work against). The
year I won the NERQ with The Nosferatu Hate You Rush deck, I didn't run
into any significant combat at all. Last year, I wasn't playing combat,
and also didn't run into any combat. I figured that this year, I'd not
run into much combat either, but for whatever reason, combat was
everywhere. Judge Josh was telling me that the Boston group has evolved
into nothing but combat decks, so it wasn't surprising that there was
so much floating around, but still, weird. I think the finals had at
least 1 combat deck (Jon's Euro Brujah).

All very strange. But, ya know, funny too 🙂

I wasn't jammed so much as stuck--Jay was full of Carrion Crows and Aid
from Bats which were doing quite a number on my small vampires with 2-3
blood each, so I was trying to build up enough blood (and trying to
build up some pool with a Blood Doll I think) to be able to make a
lunge, while desperately trying to find an Increased Strength to go
with the Sewer Lid in my hand, so when I lunged and got into a fight
with Famous Christianus and he manuvered to long with his Magnum, I
could torporize him. Sadly, by the time I got the Increased in my hand,
Jay was up to 6 or 7 pool, and Andy was on my back with 3 minions with
Potence, Celerity, and Dominate, so it just didn't work out so well.

If the game had been you as my prey and Jay as my predator, I coulda
been a contender. But instead, I was just a bum.

Robyn was slinging around intercept like a madwoman in the third round...
mostly giving it to David to hold off Shane's sneaky Dem bleeders, but
occasionally giving it to her own dudes (Casino with a .44 IIRC) to hold off
Peter's stealthy Leandro voting.
