Hey guys Dark here was wondering if Id be able to fix a full sized atx motherboard inside a briefcase or would I not have enough room for other things like the psu and drive. Ill give specs when someone asks me, but is it practical or should I just go with an matx.

I wanted to go with MSI's Fm2 gaming board the red and black one with the dragon heatsink because it comes in matx and looks good, its stats seem to holdup well for a 105 board. Plus I wasn't going to go with anything like Kavari or something just the Athalon X4 750k because I kept reading reviews that it was good.

anyways I really wanted to go with ATX so I could get an FX AM3+ processor board. Thoughts? do they have MATX am3+ that handles all bulldozer spec processors? Or should I just go with my fm2+ idea.

I mean I dont want to go with anything other than that one Athlon line for the fm2 board. Should I just go with a weaker black edition fx processor and stuff it on an matx and hope for the best?

thoughts lemme know. No I wont go get an intel board. :)

Solution
if you want to stuff an lcd panel into the lid then you would want one with a thicker lid such as this below. keep in mind that you might have to remove the lcd from its bezel unless you get something like a usb portable lcd panel which already is shaped like a tablet and is easy to stuff inside

due to the rather limited height of briefcases you may want to include small half inch to inch legs so that when you lay the case down you can have room underneath. this would allow you to put larger fans in such as a 120mm.

if you plan to always have it open then doing something...
what briefcase did you have in mind? photos?

its technically possible to fit a comptuer inside a briefcase however it would require some pretty hefty modding on your part.

i've seen computers even stuffed inside ammo cans. its a question of mounting the hardware correctly inside and making sure you give it enough ventilation.

is there a particular reason you want to pursue a briefcase? (is this just for fun or does it have a practical purpose) instead of just using a htpc frame?

Its just for fun and practicality, I wanted to do one after seeing lots of builds of them online (some of them very ghetto some of them really nice) and I wanted something portable and hyper contained with the screen and everything all inside of a case. It will have enough ventilation ive already planned on how to stuff fans in it.

I wanted to geeet this briefacase http://www.harborfreight.com/18-x-12-34-x-6-aluminum-case-69318.html

because I kept seeing it everytime I searched briefcase pc mod 😛 I dont mind modding I see it as a challenge and a fun one that will pay off. I plan to spray the case in black sandy ish color whatever they call that tan charcoal grey 😛 and than high gloss it. Im going to stuff a 15 inch in the lid and ive got a GPU picked out thats not too tall but not too small either. Id link my list but 😛 I think ill pm you my list so people dont go off and buy it.

I do plan to cut holes so the ports are on the outside and I plan to run the monitor connector out the top of the lid so when it is upright I can just hook it up than detach it put a little cap or something on the connector to protect it and velcro it to the top of the case. I tried to go with a theme every since i picked out that board. but if theres FX processor boards that work in matx format id rather much taken them. I dont have much need for an APU because they dont have r9 ones yet and you cant crossfire them effectively. That and once I build this pc. I plan to build it so it lasts a long time, Id rather not spend the money constantly upgrading 😛 that and I know parts get old and stuff but if I need to ill just buy the same board again and put it back in 😀

whoo~

as far as hardware is concerned....

if you are a gamer then you do not want integrated graphics. this means no intel integrated and no amd apus. you want a dedicated graphics card.

there arent any 970chipset or above matx socket am3+ boards available. this socket is what you would use on all the new fx chips. the only available boards in matx are older. i say matx becasue this would give you more room inside your case for other components including bottom cooling.

there are however plenty of intel matx options out there. its more money but an i5 is a very solid operating platform and you have many more choices.

the mITX platform while a bit expensive and intel only has an even smaller form factor making it even easier to stuff into a small space.

in those briefcases you listed you would only have an L shape of approximately 6 inches by 2 inches (6x3 in the other one) of free space on the bottom which is not much. matx would give you 8.5x2 (8.5x3) which is better.

you could of course use a full sized motherboard however you might want to use a larger case.

it would be better if you went with a deeper case which you can more easily mod larger fans into the side

Solution
Yeah ill probably stick with my first briefcase and get a flexable pci x16 line. Ill have to do alot of drilling O.O and cutting. Can I use one of the extra stand offs and slowly grind a hole as I dont know if I can tap with drill bits in the bottom.

i've looked at those cases before in person when i was looking for cases for my model heli....i'm not too sure you would be able to really tap to well into the flat surfaces too well. you might get a bite if you undersized the hole but its only going to be so strong. i would trust through bolts more but thats your call. or a plate on the bottom with more substance. remember that when you move the pc around it needs to be shock proof so you want the mounting positions to be good.

How about using an xbox or old ps3 case? I have both lying around and could make a joint for the monitor to move back and forth. 😛 but the first briefcase looks like ite bottom is plastik. I could use one of the mobo screws and start a hole than twist by paw. o:

Yay. If I finish this build am I allowed to post pictures as a guide if I label them for people who come across this thread and use it as reference? Or should I just post in a build thread?

i think the best way to handle it would be a build log. if you want you can post the finished result in the member system galleries and then link your build log post to it if anyone wanted to know how its done. or you can have the link to the thread in your signature like many other users do.

as for posting pictures if you intend to post quite a few i would use a service like postimg to host or another that automatically generates thumnail photos and links. in this way you can prevent the pages from taking forever to load while still keeping the content.
