[SOLVED] Broken display, HDMI to VGA adapt. not working

Hello everyone,
My proble, is that i have a mac book pro retina and my display is broken... so i had the briliant idea to connect it to an external monitor, since my monitor doesnt have an hdmi port i just bought an adaptor from HDMI to VGA and it doesnt give the signal to the monitor. Any suggestions? Should i buy a HDMI to DVI adaptor and try it so?

An HDMI to DVI adaptor should be cheaper, and much more likely to work. My Mac Mini was supplied with such an adaptor.
