Hi all
Iv just been given a PC from my friend to repair and im a little unsure what the problem is.
When I turn it on it fires up for about 2 seconds and then turns off. I changed the PSU, this did not work. A light comes on on the mobo and the cpu fan turns for a second and then stops, telling me that it is receiving power. It turns on and then off so quickly that I don’t even hear the HD spin.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

It never worked did it? He just built the thing, or made major changes to it, and now can't figure out what he did wrong, correct?

If it's doing that from turning the power supply on, you have to use the power button to fire it up, and that needs to be connected properly. If it does it when you use the power button, or the power button doesn't have any affect, the board is likely shorted on the underside from a spare standoff contacting a circuit on the back.

You know how many people who've come in here and said "My computer won't boot, what gives?" only for me to drag it out of them that they'd changed the case or motherboard? Usually after several days of people trying to help them, then you find out after all that effort it was a simple assembly problem.

the pc has been working with know problems for 2 years and suddenly it stops working. I think it's unlikely to be a simple assembly error!

Yeh, I'm glad we got that settled! I'd start testing the parts individually on other components if normal things like replacing the power supply and RAM seem to have no affect.

Could be that a loose screw was left in the case upon building/upgrading/serviceing and it shifted, causing a mobo short.
I have seen this happen in past on office computer.
