Broken screen need to transfer data to another computer

I have a broken laptop screen but alot of stuff on the hard drive that I need to transfer to another computer. I have tried to hookup an external display without any success. Is there a way to transfer the data using just a plug n play method? If not any other ideas besides paying a technician? PS I do not need the OP transferred.

Remove the hard drive and buy an external hard drive enclosure for it which plugs into a USB port. Plug it into a working computer and you should be able to access the data that's on it.
