Great news.

While Broken Sword 3 had its weaknesses and odd elements, it was still
the best title in the series and one of the better adventures released
in the last 2-3 years.

Good luck, Revolution.

Hey,

I have been meaning to play the series for awhile...is there a compilation
of 1,2 and 3 available in prep
for 4?

Cheers

Are you serious, BS3 is not a patch on BS 1&2, what really spoiled it for
me, apart from the horribly hard (and pointless) arcade sequences and the
endless box puzzles, was the control system, no matter what anyone says
there was absolutely no need to change it from point and click, it just made
it really fiddly and console like and just took the enjoyment out of it for
me. I know i'm not alone in thinking this and hopefully revolution will
learn from their mistakes and deliver a follow up that the fans (old and
new) deserve.

Don't think so but 1 & 2 can be bought cheap (midprice). Not sure about 3
though. I played 3 first, then 1 & 2. It's probably recommended to do it the
other way around although the graphics on 1 & 2 are a bit outdated 🙂

I'm assuming by outdated you mean "not 3D"

I didn't have much problems with the controls, but some puzzles were indeed
frustrating and repetitive. But then, the reward after solving a frustrating
puzzle is great ;-)

>Are you serious, BS3 is not a patch on BS 1&2,

I played BS1 when it originally came out (called Circle of Blood here
in US) and gave it up midway out of boredom and also frustration of
its inane timing sequences. I remember, I gave the game to someone for
free through these newsgroups.

At the time, there was some choice available in the genre and so I
could afford to do that.

I only revisited BS1, after I tried BS3 demo. I liked it and wanted to
play the earlier two games in the series. Also, the genre had somewhat
dried up, so I didn't have the luxury to throw away half decent games.

In my second run through the game, I still found the timed action
sequences annoying and the overall gameplay too linear and
restrictive. Broken Sword 2 was somewhat worse, with quite an idiotic
plot and very strange puzzles. The game seemed unfinished.

In comparison, Broken Sword 3 is completely out of league of the
earlier two games. The puzzles and the plot elements make sense for
the most part (within its game world) and the graphics and voice
acting are quite good. I even liked the interface. The timed sequences
were lot less frustrating and easier to handle than those in Broken
Sword 1 & 2.

If I have to grade the series, I'd say

Broken Sword 1, 6/10
Broken Sword 2, 4/10
Broken Sword 3, 8-/10

To compare this with Gabriel Knight,

Gabriel Knight 1, 10+/10
Gabriel Knight 2, 9-/10
Gabriel Knight 3, 8+/10

I liked its interface a lot (much better than the regular
pixel-hunting one) and also its overall production values. A lot of
people complained about the 'moving boxes' puzzles so I am sure guys
at Revolution will listen. Except for that, I hope they keep every
thing the same as Broken Sword 3.

It's a must-buy game for me.

It's a must-NOT-buy game for me - BS3 was a complete and utter waste
of time. BS1 was superb and BS2, albeit not as good as BS1, was still
a heck of a lot better than the abysmal BS3.

Still, each to his/her own I guess.

Just out of curiosity, do either of you play any other genres?

(I'm betting noman enjoys arcade/platformers, maybe RPGs -
I wonder if this might account for the difference?)

(Myself, I've played BS1 and enjoyed the story immensely,
but found the pacing extremely slow, as I recall. I was not
in much hurry to play BS2 afterward. Yet on the other hand,
I'm expecting to enjoy BS3(+4): more of a 'hands-on' game
it seems - strange eh?)

I do enjoy all the genres, even flight-sims.

Still, that's the reason I listed my preference for the three Gabriel
Knight games (my favourite being the first one) to show that I don't
fall for production values or interfaces. It's the gameplay that
matters and the first Gabriel Knight, even being more than 10 year old
title now, had everything right in that regards.

Broken Sword 3 is simply the best game in the series with the most
coherent game design and plot and the one with best puzzles (moving
crates notwithstanding). Without BS3, the Broken Sword Series can't
really be compared with the genre classics such as DOTT, Monkey
Island, Sanitarium, Sierra's Quest titles, GK games etc.

My 2¢

Yes, in the past I've played pretty much everything. As I get older
though I find that the only type of game I play is Adventures
(although I still like anything that is original and immersive). I
still detest BS3 though. 🙂
