I've read numerous complaints about the hl 1440 having a drum unit that
begins to print streaks after only a few months. To anyone's knowledge,
has this been fixed? I have heard good word-of-mouth reviews for this
printer, but the complaints I have read are troublesome. I just placed
an order for this printer, so I have about 12 hours to cancel it.

Thanks,
Gabriel

Sorry, can't help you. I just bought one but have only had if for 2 weeks.
Works great. Where have you heard about the flakey drum?

Not to be overly general, but check out the reviews on amazon.com, for a
start. There is at least one post at forums.anandtech.com regarding this
issue, namely
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=27&threadid=1404214&highlight_key=y&keyword1=hl+AND+1440+AND+drum

Also, if you do a search on groups.google.com, you will find many such
complaints. Most of them seem to be from printers purchased a year or
more ago, but that just means it may take that long for them to fail. It
seems to be a luck-of-the-draw issue, but if anyone has evidence to show
that Brother has acknowledged and fixed this problem, please share.

I have about 20 of these pritners. Duty cycle on this application is fairly
low, about around 150-200 pgs/mth. I haven't had any problems with the
drums. Just lucky I guess.....

Well, hopefully I don't have a bad one. OTOH, I hear Brother has excellent
support, so if the thing goes belly in less than a year, send it back.

Well, check your warranty, because I am pretty sure the drum is not
covered. I'm sticking with my purchase, so I'll be sure to share any
problems.
