Question Brother MFC-L2710DW - Fax does not work

I bought a Brother MFC-L2710DW printer/fax/scanner a few days ago. It is a brand new machine, and I installed it using the brand new cord in the box.
The machine is printing fine.
The machine gets a dial tone, but the fax is not working.
I have Verizon phone service.
I have no phone or answering machine plugged into the fax machine. The unit is plugged right into the wall.
I tested the phone line outlet with a working phone, and it works.
If a fax is sent, the machine rings once, the display reads, "Receiving, " but no fax comes through.
Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be?

You usually can't T.30 fax over a VoIP phone line, only analog plain old telephone service (POTS).

I am able to fax over Comcast voice but that's designed for it, with T.38 protocol.

Thank you. It is a Verizon DSL line.
However....The problem was just solved! I called Verizon after exhaustive troubleshooting with Brother, and Verizon discovered that they must have made an error when entering a Call Forwarding order for another customer. As a result, incoming faxes were being forwarded to another number, a voice line of business unknown to me. Verizon removed the forwarding, and the fax now works!
