Browsing is fast but donloading in torrent is very slow

iam usi bsnl broadband the internet speed is fast about 200kbps wen i downloading in torrent its make very very slow......... why plz fix it my problem my pc os is windows 7

You are able to browse the internet just fine. You are only having issues when downloading torrents, which is typically a form of piracy.

It is against Tom's Hardware policy for any active forum member to assist with anything in regards to illegal activities such as piracy, cheating, etc.

You are able to browse the internet through one of the three popular browsers (Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer) correct?

If not, power cycle you internet connectivity equipment and make sure it didn't hit a snag.

You can also go to Speedtest.net and run a Speed test on the computer in question and see what results it provides.

If it's only an issue with torrent files, you will not get assistance from anyone (if they take pride in their membership) here as its against forum rules.

thanx for reply......... already checked in speedtest.net it says 180 to 200kbps downloadind and 30kbps uploding... wen download direct from browsers its speed will be 180kbps around but in torrent is only below 10kbps whyyyyyyyyyyyy?? plz reply me

Actually, torrenting is no more illegal than anything else. It's what people torrent that gives it the "piracy" name. There are legitimate uses of bittorrent, including game download/updates by real game companies to help them with distribution efforts. Of course, their client is embedded into the game and thus can't really be used for anything else, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a non-piracy use of the tool.

I've distributed large amounts of my photographs among my friends using bittorrent, because I have a relatively slow uplink speed, and it's a great way for everyone to get things much faster than if they individually had to get it from me.

Anyway, to the question: It's likely that ISPs are cracking down on ALL forms of bittorrent (it's too much effort to figure out if something's legit or not), so I would guess that's why you might be seeing poor performance. Also, some ISPs offer "turbo" service for websurfing, where the first few MB of a file transfer happen pretty fast, then they throttle subsequent data from the same transfer request. For web surfing, that's fine. For streaming or bittorrent or other large transfers, you'll see a performance hit.

That being said, in 99% of all cases, what a torrent engine is used for is to illegally download copyrighted material for personal use, without paying.

That's theft, and there's no way you can say that it's legal.

As for your question, you're going to be seeing slow transfer rates. That's just the way it works - you're connected to other computers with the files, and are downloading information as they upload the file - thus you're limited by their upload speed.

When i use torrents with lots of seeds it downloads fast 1-2MB a second how fast does it need to be? either way its probably fine to talk about this on this site as long as you don't use this information to do anything illegal

you have 180kbps internet I have about 14mbps, equivalent to about 12 or 15,000 kbps. Your download speed is SLOW, browsing is fine but i mean when you're downloading things that is going to affect things

I will assume he wants to download some freeware or share something personal via p2p network which is not illegal at all.

So you should check if your listen port is blocked by firewall, and also note that download speed depends on number of seeds/peers, the smaller this ratio is the slower the download is.

Simply using a bittorrent protocol does not imply patent infringement. Heck, legitimate companies use P2P for updates and patches. Blizzard uses P2P to lighten the load on it's servers when you download patches or expansions. It's not against the rules. Blatently asking "how do i pirate / copy xxxxxx" is.


That said, OP, it could be several things. Your ISP could have problems with P2P and might be throttling your connection. But in all honesty, P2P protocols such as bittorrent are very inefficent. If your bandwidth is only 200kbit (really slow by modern standards), running P2P on it won't even net you half that typically. Browsing will "feel" faster because web pages are typically only HTML text with a few graphics and a sometimes flash/active-x/java. It doesn't take much bandwidth to browse at a reasonably comfortable speed.

Yeah, I know that not all torrents are illegal content. I just know that it's frowned upon to render assistance to someone wanting help increasing the speeds simply because we can't verify the activities being done :)

If I stomped any toes, ruffled any feathers, or chipped any teeth, I humbly apologize.

I also agree with the crackdown by ISPs which could be a result of the slowdowns. I know for fact that HughesNet employs the Fair Access Policy that limits you to so much downloading and then they cut you to below download speeds.

first of all ignore all the FUD on this thread.

then go to the site where you downloaded your client from ( utorrent, bitcomet, ect.) and read the FAQ on how to properly configure your client based on your bandwidth. while your at it see if you don't have a "default" limit on your download or upload speed; many clients have this.

ex. in utorrent there is a set up guide under option in the tool bar which will test your bandwidth and then configure not just how much bandwidth you use but also how many other connections it will allow. you may just need a little "tweaking".

so, you're better off going to those/that site. obviously there is too much FUD here - people will stick their nose in your business than minding their own . . .
