Hi, I'm hoping someone here can help me this.
I started getting blue screens about a week ago - Memory Management, Irql, ntfs.sys, video driver errors - that sort of thing so I updated/uninstalled/reinstalled drivers and programs with no luck. Ran HDD diagnostics and Memtest with no errors. Removed the video card and tried to run the PC with one ram stick at a time again no luck. By this stage the blue screens had gotten so frequent I couldn't get any work done so I decided to hell with it and went for a format and reinstall of Vista.
I attempted to install multiple times and the screen would freeze or blue screen at "expanding files" or after restart sometimes with a buzzing noise coming from somewhere. I took the HDD out and used Killdisk on it and a full format with another computer - no go. I got a spare Hdd and tried to install Vista on that with the same results.
I've tried to install Vista Home and Vista Basic, disabled the disk drive and used a bootable usb. The weird thing in all this is I installed Ubuntu 12.04 (Linux) from a usb with no problem and it seemed to be perfectly stable but I'd prefer not to have to learn the idiosyncrasies of a new OS, not at my age....grumble grumble....

I 'm completely stumped.
Anyway any help will be greatly appreciated.

My PC
Inspirion 530
Intel Core 2 Quad 2.33 GHz
Ati 4870 1 gb
4 gb ram
PSU X-Power 700 W

Solution
...

Thanks for replying. I can't localise the source of the buzz sometimes I think it's the MB sometimes the HDD or the PSU. I'm swapping out the PSU right now with 300 W the computer originally came with and will update.
I tried a Vista Home disk and a Vista basic from another pc so it'd be unusual if both were iffy when neither had been ever used before.

OK, so I popped in the new PSU and attempted to install Vista Basic from disk - it froze before getting to "copying files", tried again and got a blue screen at "expanding files"
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT stop code 0x000004e (0x00000002,0x000575da,0x0007f58f,0x00000010)

Put in the Vista Home disk and it froze at "expanding files" with the buzzing noise coming from the motherboard (I think).

Dug out a XP SP2 disk from a long gone computer started install and it restarted, entered product key and a couple of minutes later it blue screened - IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL STOP CODE 0X0000000A (0X00000018, 0X0000001C, 0X00000000, 0X804FAZA6)

Also screaming at it doesn't seem to help and I'm pretty sure my neighbors now think I've gone bananas.

The buzzing is the mobo VRM module, the errors are vague but point to ram (vrm related). You might be in the market for a new motherboard.
Screaming failed? If you use the computer for target practice is that sound "troubleshooting" or a waste of ammunition? (with aluminum arrows):pt1cable:

Solution
New motherboard? Damn, I was hoping it wasn't that. Oh well probably would need an upgrade for games sooner or later anyway. The thing that's got me baffled is why Ubuntu installed (twice) and ran no problem.

The MB is definitely gonna get get used a a target, I actually made a couple of miniature bow and arrow sets while idly waiting for the multitude of tests and stuff to run but I think I'm just going use hammer. More satisfying.

That's the thing there's no noise when running Ubuntu. It seems completely stable but I'd have to use Wine compatibility thingy for a bunch of programs/games plus much as I curse Microsoft sometimes it's what I'm familiar with.
By the way thanks for taking the time to help.
