Hi,

The Problem

I Have been receiving BSOD only after launching a game. i can start windows fine, run basic programs (itunes, sketch-up, photoshop) but once i launch a game i get a BSOD. i can launch path of exile and play but if it gets really intense, my screen flickers/freezes then BSOD, if i launch skyrim i cant even get to the opening scene after the intro credits roll. this happens on both games with graphics setting at low and high, makes no difference.

System info;

-win7 ultimate
-mobo - ASUS M5A99X EVO R2
-CPU - AMD amd fx-4170
-GPU - xfx radeon hd 7700
-PSU - Corsair TX650
-RAM - G-skill Sniper series 8GB (2 x 4gb)
F3-14900CL9D-8GBSR
DDR3-1866-CL9-10-9-28 1.5V
-SSD - Kingston HyperX 128gb

what ive done;

-windows memory diagnostic test; removed one of the RAM modules and ran one test on each module individually. no errors.

-Memtest86; Removed one ram module and ran one test for 3 hours on each individually. no errors.

-My mobo is an ASUS and i have just uninstalled the "AI SUITE" driver package as i heard that may interfere with CPU & GPU. no change...

-Computer temps are all normal.

-Im 95% sure i have all the correct drivers installed and up to date. i dont think i missed any key drivers. is there a good free driver downloader software anyone would recommend to help me find if i missed anything?

-All of the hardware is seated correctly.

-I have managed to find two .dmp files in winows/mindump folder. not sure if these are the right .DMP files to go along with the blue screen error. I also dont know how to load them onto the forum for you to see.

Other Notes & Questions

-I can upload my DXDiag if need be
-I have two .dmp files i dont know how to upload but can find out if needed.
-I recovered this error message after a BSOD when i started up in safe mode;

-what would my next step be if i have found no errors in the memory tests? im really hoping this isnt a hardware issue as i have no funds to repair at the moment.

-Could it be a timing or voltage conflict issue with RAM and MOBO?

-Im lost...please help...

Thanks!

Solution
Up to now, I think the problem is the hardware problem either the GPU or the pciex16 slot ( MB), so if you have other GPU then try it, if you have not problem then it it the GPU. If you have the same problem then it maybe the MB pciex16 slot problem.
The BCCode 116 is more likely related to the GPU, maybe the driver or you change the GPU, so you need to try uninstall the GPU driver then using the either CCleaner or Advanced SystemCare to clean registry files, after that install the driver again.
CCleaner or Advanced SystemCare http://download.cnet.com/windows/

Cin19,

Best way to uninstall driver cleanly would be to boot up my rig normally, go into device manager and uninstall from there?

then run one of those two programs? of the two which do you recommend?

I wont be able to try this until i get home but thank you. you gave me something to look forward to now, hopefully this is the fix.

Both of them should be similar, but I use the Advanced SystemCare, you can uninstall the driver by going to "programs and features" or using the uninstallation program comes with those utility softwares. If you use the Advanced SystemCare you can uninstall or upgrade the drivers, the other one has those features too.

Hi Jitpublisher,

Thanks for the thoughts.

Why do you think the driver would be bad Vs. having a bad driver install?

I doubt its still under warranty, thatd be to easy...

thanks.

Cin19,

Thanks again for the info. ill be giving this a try once i get home. hope this is the fix...

first thing, Cin19: I downloaded systemcare at work to take home, but thought, hey! maybe it would be a good idea to use this on my work computer to clean it up. NO! bad idea, i dont even know what it did but it fucked it. i couldnt even log into my account. it signed me into a guest account after reboot. i actually ended up just using system restore and going back a few days. I dont have system restore turned on on my home PC so i didnt even bother using it. theres also a lot of other shit that comes with that program, not very clean. im not the biggest fan of it right now haha. thanks for the idea though!

I wrote a response in my other thread i have going on. im just going to copy paste it here as i dont want to do it all over again.

Alright, where to start this morning....

First thing i did last night was try and adjust my freq. and timing of memory in Bios. I followed the simple steps in the little guide G-skill rep supplied. So i adjusted the timing to my specific RAM (it was close but it definitely wasnt what my RAMs specified for) and i adjusted the voltage accordingly. as well as increasing my CPU/NB a bit. computer was only idling though since i was just in bios, so when i say i increase it a couple points i looked at what the voltage was while it was in auto mode and just added to that? is that ok or will it be underpowered once it goes under a load now?

Regarding the NM voltage and stuff, there was a lot of CPU/NB option to adjust. so i adjusted them all.... increased everything by a couple points pretty much. current CPU/NB Freq is at 900MHz, this sound like its in the right area? there was also a ton of DRAM timing control options that were set to auto that i left alone. these were things like read, write, ras$, cas$, refresh.

there were a couple other options that looked like i should be changing it but i dint know what to so i left it. they were the CPU voltage freq, dram voltage freq, and refresh rate (7.8ms)

I took a whole butload of screenshots while fiddling around in BIOS, unfortunately i left that flash drive at home so i cant share.

Once i finished adjusting everything in BIOS, i uninstalled my graphics card driver. im not sure if theres a specific way to do this but i went into uninstall program and removed catalyst control center, then to device manager and uninstalled driver from there, restarted comp, and installed driver again. I did this because in another forum someone said they think my issue might be a bad driver install or a faulty GPU because of this error;

So, After all of this i ran Speedfan to crank my fans to max, CPU-Z to monitor, and Coretemps to get another read on temps. Please keep in my i also have my tower sitting on my desk, side panel open, and a 12" powerful fan blasting into my case. Then i began to run Prime95. almost immediately my CPU temp skyrocketed. the max temp got up to about 75c... i said fuck it and let it finish the stress test anyways. test finished fine with no errors, smoke, smells or anything. i only ran it for about 5-10 mins though. CPU was at 75c for maybe 2-4 mins.

then it was time to test a game. I put all of path of exile setting to highest including AA and such. game ran smoothly, no errors, flickering, BSOD or anything. i didnt have time to get into a party so i could load my screen with players/spells but i got some big mobs, and spammed some spells that would use a lot of graphics and such. temps got up to around 50c. Then i tried skyrim. before doing all these changes when i would launch skyrim before (for those familiar) i could get into the main menu of the game (not just the pre-launch menu thing) and select new game. once i hit new game it started to load, i got the picture of the dragon idol, smoke rising, level 1 in the top corner. then freeze. black screen. BSOD. Now when i launched the game i selected new game, got the dragon idol with the smoke rising right before the intro cinematic. and BOOM! white screen this time. screen remained white for a min or two. then my taskbar appeared on the bottom of the screen. i alt-tabbed. nothing. ctrl-alt-delete, went into task manager and it showed skyrim not responding. i ended task, and my computer carried on like nothing happened. no errors came up in the windows action center or anything.

Here are some links of my crazy temps during prime95. If i could get some suggestions as to what to adjust to bring my cpu temp back down thatd be nice. i adjusted a lot of stuff in bios so maybe ill just reset and try again.

starting to lose hope... ill try installing BF4 tonight see if i can get that to run. maybe its a bad install of skyrim? although even before i never got a BSOD in POE until after about an hour of gameplay and only during a time when there was a lot going on on my screen.

thanks again.

Sorry about those utility software, somehow it does come with other shit softwares.
The 116 error code is related to the GPU driver or GPU, but from the screenshots, you have other probel that is the CPU temp, I guess you don't have the aftermarket cpu cooler, you should consider to get one because I read the other forum, they said if the temp is in 55-60c range then the amd fx-CPUs become unstable. Also the cpu voltage is too high (1.5V) even you don't oc the cpu, you should keep the setting in auto because if that voltage is high and it will cause the cpu temp getting higher too. I don't know if the cpu is unstable or over heat to cause the BSOD, then it has a chain reaction that triggers the 116 error or not.
The RAM setting is right.

No, i do not have an aftermarket heatsink on my CPU. i had no intentions of overclocking or anything. although i guess i just did a bit so maybe i do need to get something for it. even though my cpu temp was up at 70c during a prime95 test everything still seemed stable, came out with no errors or anything. also, when i tried POE and Skyrim my temps hovered around 40-50, with no stability problems in POE it seemed.

so i will reduce my CPU voltage by turning to "auto" and try that. Is the cpu voltage directly related to CPU heat? it makes sense, i get it if thats true. what about frequency's? do these have effects on temps?

Do you think my steps in removing the old gpu driver were ok? or is it crucial to make sure the registry files are cleaned out before re-installing again? just want to know if its safe to rule out GPU driver since ive uninstalled and re-installed.

thanks again!

The frequency does too, if you change it higher than means you OC it.

When you uninstall the program, if you don't clean the registry files then those things are like fingerprints left over in the PC, you have to clean it up before reinstall the programs.

ok so after all this i have a pretty noob question... can you direct me to where in the systemclean program i clean my registrys? i cant seem to find it in any of the option menu's. unless you know of a good program that specific for cleaning registry's, ill give that a try.

ugh, i guess ill go through and tone down some freq as well. or do you recommend all of that be set to auto since im going to set cpu voltage to auto anyways? or should I look up the optimum freq for my ram, cpu and mobo and set it to that?

certainly appreciate your input Cin19.

Because I used the Advanced SystemCare 7, here is the download. http://www.iobit.com/
When you install the software, you need to make sure don't install other , I mean read the small prints before you click "OK" because it will list what programs ( like the toolbar- you don't need it) will be installed into your PC.

If you don't oc yes, set all the setting to auto but not the RAM section, because the MB will default set to either 1333mhz or 1600mhz. You need to manual set the RAM to 900mhz also maybe the RAM voltage too, because I don't use that MB, I don't knoe the details, you can google it or read the manual.

Cin19 - C'mon man, of course i read the small print and skip over the cheap filler! made sure to not install anything but the core SystemClean. i still cant find where in the program i start a registry clean though. Where did you get 900MHz for my ram setting? are you just throwing a number out for conversation sake? my model shows a speed of 1600MHz and tested at 1866MHz. (i believe i set mine to 1600MHz in BIOS).

Getting very confused now,

Because my temps skyrocketed on my first attempt at OC'ing and trying to get the correct timing and voltages matched up for my RAM modules, last night i put my CPU voltage and some of the other CPU related voltages and frequencies back to "auto"

after that i ran Prime95. i got about 3 mins into my first prime test and i received a BSOD. there were no error codes displayed on the BSOD. and it was actually frozen i had to hard reebot to get out of it. so after the first unsuccessful test and reboot i tried it again after firing my PC back up. I ran another prime test for 10 mins. my highest cpu temp was now 42c so that was much better than the 70c i received the night before. and there were no errors or blue screens this time. why would i get a BSOD on the one test and not the other? could it be because i changed the CPU voltages and frequencies to auto and it was just figuring out optimal settings? not sure if thats how it works?

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/65445952/Screenshot...

so after a successful 10 min prime test with good temps i ran a 3D benchmark test (3D mark11). i wanted to see if this would run because i was thinking maybe this is a GPU hardware or software issue since i was getting BSOD during gameplay. It made it through the whole benchmark test, not very good FPS at times but made it none the less. after running a successful 3D benchmark test i got excited thinking maybe its fixed. so i tried skyrim again, granted i made it the furthest ive made it yet, it still froze. this time i actually saw some cinematic. only 30 seconds worth before it froze but i havent made it past rolling credits before that. again this time it didnt go to a BSOD, i got another white screen, so i alt-ctrl-dlt to task manager and ended the program as it was not responding. now im pissed, again. and its time for bed. so i started up another prime test, watched it for ten mins and went to bed. got up this morning and 6 hours later prime was still going strong, CPU temps still at 42c and no errors had occurred.

Recap: got BSOD as soon as i pressed new game for skyrim and during intensive battles of POE. I changed Ram voltage and time in BIOS. started running too high of temps but no more BSOD in skyrim, no its freezes and doesnt respond so im able to end task. then i tuned CPU settings to "auto" in bios. temps are back to normal under load. also uninstalled GPU driver and re-installed. prime test cause BSOD, reboot, prime test showed no errors, 3D mark passed with no errors. still skyrim freezes. granted no more BSOD but equally annoying. i havent had time to install other games to test or to spend time back in POE to see if i get another BSOD or not.

Anyone have any thoughts as to what my issue might be? registry files with old GPU driver info is what someone else had mentioned? another had said RMA my GPU, G-skill rep said to tweak my bios to suit my RAM modules which seemed to stop the BSOD's now i get the white screen freezing. im pretty close to doing a fresh install of windows as much as i dont want to... think that might do it?

Thanks again!

1) The RAM is dual channel, so 900Mhzx2=1800MHz, sorry I should say 933Mhz. Or can you use the XMP profile in the BIOS, check the manual.
2) In the Advanced SystemCare 7, in the "care" section, unclick the "disk defragment" because you have the SSD. Then click "Scan", also click "automatically repair".
3) Also do you install the newer "AMD chipset driver" too because the chipset does controll pciex16 too. http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/chipset?os=Windows+8+-+32

1) thanks for clarifying.

2) awesome, ill check that once i get home and open up systemclean.

3)Is downloading the chipset from the AMD website the same as downloading the chipset from ASUS (my mobo)? i certainly installed my mobo chipset driver but not directly from AMD...

Im pretty sure i have all of those setting set to auto. so hopefully the CPU/NB Freq matches up to the voltage its got. ill be double check that CPU/NB Freq is for sure set to auto though once im home.

I didnt have much time this weekend to test things out but here's what i did do:

Installed BF4 (i wanted another game to test). once installed i launched it, i then got an error saying i need to update my graphics driver (it even told me the version # but i forgot). so i went to the AMD site and downloaded the newest version available. when i installed i first selected to uninstall existing drivers (as i heard this cleans registry files as well). Then i continued to install the new driver. After i that finished i went to try BF4 again, im pretty sure i got that same update driver error again (im a little foggy on this one as im usually in the clouds when im on my comp). I continued to launch the game, watched some intro cinematic, got to main menu, went into video options, all of the video option were shaded grey and wouldn't let me adjust. everything was set to low and or off. so i continued to start new game, cinematic rolled for a couple mins, i was starting to get an erection at this point, then BaM BSOD crash. the screen said something about graphics card or graphics card driver failure to recover from crash (cant quite remember) after reboot i tried skyrim again, and instead of it freezing and getting a white screen that i can end program it went to a BSOD as well.

In short, uninstalled old driver ( i believe the best way to remove all existing fingerprints of old) installed the new driver, now skyrim gets BSOD instead of freeze, and BF4 still tells me to update graphics driver, also crashes to BSOD. BSOD error something like graphics card failure or graphics card driver failure to recover from crash.

thanks for the insight everyone.

Up to now, I think the problem is the hardware problem either the GPU or the pciex16 slot ( MB), so if you have other GPU then try it, if you have not problem then it it the GPU. If you have the same problem then it maybe the MB pciex16 slot problem.

Solution
Thanks Cin,

thats kind of what ive come to as well. im going to try and see if i can find a friend with a spare card to try in it.

stupid question im sure but... can i put a Gefore card in my set-up or will it need to be a radeon?

thanks

Hi,

Didnt have much time over the holidays to tweak around but this is what i tired.

got the AMD Full chipset driver from the AMD site. uninstalled all AMD drivers through AMD software. then re-installed all graphics and chipset drivers. Ran 3DMark benchmark test and recieved another BSOD with an error code 1016 i believe.

Ive pretty much given up on this now. looks like ill be shelling out some coins for a new GPU as im not sure what to do next.

Just a thought, Would it make a difference if the TPU switch on my MOBO is turned on or off? i have tweaked my RAM setting in BIOS (essentially OC'ing i guess) and am now curious if that switch needs to be on or off. i never thought of it before just came across it and dont really know what to think of it. not much info out there about it, from what i understand it is used to physically switch on OC'ing but you can also OC and tweak via BIOS &/or the ASUS AI Suite software. or do they need to be used together?
**Just read some articles stating these buttons are essentially an auto overclock, another option to using BIOS or the AI Suite software. Both of my switches are OFF as ive tuned manually DOHC in BIOS.

thanks,

Another thought i had is;

Uninstall GPU Drivers, turn off machine, remove graphics card, boot up machine, shut down machine, put GPU back in, boot up machine, install new drivers.

Im not sure if i can do this though as i have no onboard graphics and i dont know what will happen when i try to boot up with no GPU inserted and no on board graphics??

been pretty quiet on here, still looking for some input, thoughts, ideas please.

im beginning to stink of desperation...

got another idea, because im not sure if it is 100% a dead GPU im going to try and insert the GPU into the other PCIE slot. since my Mobo has two slots for sli/Xfire i midea as well try the other one and make sure its not my mobo before i buy a new gpu. is there a PCIE slot thats dedicated for use when only 1 GPU is installed or am i able to use either slot?

I will try the other PCIE slot with my current GPU tonight. If nothing comes of that i have a good friend at future shop that said to bring it in tomorrow and he'll pop in some other gpu's and test it out.

I have come to the idea that it is a hardware issue between my GPU or MoBo. do you think im far off with that assumption?

thanks for all input Cin!
