[SOLVED] BSOD - "Driver Power State Failure"

Aug 9, 2020

Started off with an issue of not being able to shut down. If I tried, it would bsod with "DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE".
Took apart my entire computer, cleaned it and reassembled.
Now I can't even log in. It will boot to the login screen and after about 5 seconds, it will freeze and bsod with "WHEA_Uncorrectable_Error".
I reassembled my computer a second time and am still getting the same error.
I can still boot into safe mode with networking. Tried updating all drivers to no avail (unless I missed one).

Edit: After resetting BIOS settings, back to original issue of not being able to shut down without a bsod.

CPU = I7 4790K
MB - Asus Z97A
Ram - 16gb Corsair RAM
GPU - Nvidia ?

First 2 whea errors could be GPU related, 3rd one is as it mentions the Nvidia in process. All 3 look the same. I don't see Nvidia cards cause whea errors very often.

Clock watchdog Timeout - results are incomplete

the last 6 errors are all power state failures, all NDIS which is a windows networking driver
Caused by LAN drivers Or Avast

can be caused by Overclocking

Comment: The GPU tweaking driver "iomap64.sys" was found on your system. (AI Suite or GPU Tweak 2)

Comment: The overclocking driver "RTCore64.sys" was found on your system. (MSI Afterburner)

Possible Motherboard page: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z97A/
There are probably BIOS updates available for your system. We do not recommend updating to BETA versions. You are using version 1304. Wait for additional information before deciding to update or not. Important: Verify that I have linked to the correct motherboard. Updating your BIOS can be risky. Never try it when you might lose power (lightning storms, recent power outages, etc).

This information can be used by others to help you. Someone else will post with more information. Please wait for additional answers. Good luck.

If running AI SUite, remove it..
If running MSI AFterburner, remove it.
If running GPU Tweak 2, remove it.

BIOS update could help but its questionable as your PC worked perfectly fine on the version you on all this time. You are on the release version of the bios, I wouldn't suggest updating the the latest Beta version but version 2801 wouldn't hurt. Its still 5 years old though.
It is the version I am on - https://www.asus.com/au/Motherboards/Z97A/HelpDesk_BIOS/

You would want to update the chipset driver at same time as bios, https://www.asus.com/au/Motherboards/Z97A/HelpDesk_Download/

page 2-1 here shows steps to updating bios - https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1150/Z97-A/E9378_Z97-A_UG_V2_WEB.pdf

GPU is an EVGA GeForce GTX 970
I've update the google drive link to have only the latest 2 dump files from today.
1st attempt was after I disabled my Intel(R) Ethernet Connection
2nd attempt was after I uninstalled it and tried to install the new driver (which didn't take since a pop-up stated "The installed version of Intel(R) Network Connections is not supported for upgrades. You must uninstall it before installing this version." Then it somehow installed itself to the previous I just uninstalled.
I also disabled my Avast for this attempt. Should I try to uninstall it instead?

hmm, the same chipset as I have.
Currently using a Asus Z97 Pro Wifi
My Drivers are from Dec 2019, Version 12.17.10.8
although I do find earlier reference to them in June 2018, so my date is clearly wrong.

according to Microsoft this is the latest driver - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/do...k-Adapter-Driver-for-Windows-10?product=36773

the installed version behaviour sounds like this one - https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...714-e31e-427e-99d8-670e309de382?auth=1&page=1

Tried installing the latest driver from that link (file was called PROWinx64.exe). Didn't update. (See google link for screenie2)
Tried uninstalling the device itself along with the drivers then running the file again. It installed the old version and the same error popped up.

Also need to mention that I did a windows update yesterday to see if that helped (from 1903 to 1909). No help.

EDIT: To reiterate and clarify my issue: If I try to shutdown or restart my computer, it will stay on the "shutting down" or "restarting" screen for a good 2 minutes before a BSOD pops up (DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE). It used to only takes seconds to restart or shut down my computer.

I wasn't notified that this thread has been updated. I ran the dump files through the debugger and got the following information: https://jsfiddle.net/2zqfek78/show This link is for anyone wanting to help. You do not have to view it. It is safe to "run the fiddle" as the page asks.

Losing my mind over this issue. Can't do a clean windows install either since I can't restart or shutdown without a bsod. Can't run driver verifier either due to this bsod.
Here's what I've done since the last post:
Re-checked all SATA and power cable connections.
Ran the following:
sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Tested shutting down with individual ram sticks plugged in.

Uploaded two new dump files. The one dated 8/22 was after I did all the things listed above. 8/23 was after I decided screw it and tried to run driver verifier anyway.

Sorry, i can assure you its not every week my GPU dies and I get a new PC and want to test it in some games... you probably understand that?

those 2 errors both mention NDIS. That is INternet/LAN related.

Yeah, the Proset on the intel site aren't right, I should have thought more.

its none of the things you tested, it still looks like the Intel drivers. Try uninstalling Avast and see if it keeps happening as we have seen AV cause errors before too.

Colif, awesome you were able to get a new GPU! Watcha get? Whatever it is, I'm already jealous. lol
You do you man, no worries. I'm actually planning on building a new rig myself. But I still want this one to function so I can give it to my girlfriend lol.

Also, yes. I've already uninstalled Avast. I'll try more fiddle around more with the intel drivers.

axe0axe0, sorry I've been just using the same google link in the op and updating the files in that linked folder. Here's the link for ease: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1X32Gz7vxYtAZfYmdkHfNj8arNFx2VjyI

Thanks again for everyone's help.

its possible these instructions also help create a full dump for Axe. He may get further than I have :)

Actually..you can just update your computer driver..
To update you driver..
Seach device manager and expand all driver...
Then click automatic update drivers
here link you can learn
zCAVn9veDv_oZg5WwFPYbGwd_MOE_0Izy7yQrFBPsu85z2WgJ3ikTH3fagVtZRv2O8nWgNHpYiWO2wV6otKWH1eGczgp41Gp8lpc5JdKfPiUJIYDZ2ULVmhch-g1vdVSCkdToUFX

With many devices registered that's quite a time-consuming task.

To give an update, I am still working on the dump. It's like finding a needle in a haystack looking for the element that caused the crash. The description of the crash mentions you should look for the IRP causing the crash, but the challenge is finding that IRP. It doesn't look like the dump is going to give me favors giving it an extra challenge, so right now I'm running something that gives me an overview of IRPs that I can search through but it's not known for its speed.

No luck so far. Curious if you made any headway axe0axe0?

I've uploaded my last two minidumps to the google link.
I've noticed two different behaviors:
  • If I try to put the computer to sleep, it will eventually shut down on it's own by crashing (see mini dump dated 9/4). I can't observe any behavior since putting the computer to sleep will just show a black screen.
  • If I try to restart or shut down, it will bsod like before (see mini dump dated 9/3).

I thought I was the only one with this problem! I've been getting BSOD driver power state failure too. I reinstalled windows fresh but now my computer just hangs. I've been running latencymon and noticed ndis.sys (network driver interface) is the highest on the list. Version is 12.17.10.8. I updated from my Asus x99 deluxe site with new LAN drivers but that didn't fix it. I tried uninstalling all my network drivers but it seems to just reinstall them after reboot. I updated my BIOS to the latest too but that didn't change anything. I got drivers from Intel's site directly but that didn't fix it. I even followed Intel's tutorial on how to remove and remnants of the driver in the registry. Even after that driver 12.17.10.8 reinstalled and I still show latency/hangups.
What's strange is when I do latencymon it tells me ndis.sys is the problem, but when I get driver power state failure it tells me usb3hub is the problem. Can't uninstall that either though of course.
