Question BSOD error "Unmountable Boot Volume" ?

I had an ISO file. I mount it into a virtual drive. After that, I restarted my laptop. It stuck in BSOD error with stop code "Unmountable Boot Volume". How do you fix it?

Is there any other easy way out?
Unmountable boot volume means - there is some problem with boot process:
OS drive corrupted/ inaccessible/ failed,
bootloader corrupted.

You have to boot into some diagnostic environment (like windows installation environment)
and perform appropriate steps to diagnose the situation.

It's possible at the end you'll have to reinstall windows or replace your OS drive.
Or you can also skip diagnostics and replace the drive without checking anything.

OS: Windows 11

BSOD error stop code: "Unmountable Boot Volume"

I tried these fixes:
  • Used a usb Windows installation media -> startup repair, issue not solved.
  • Opened command prompt -> tried following commands: bootrec fixboot, rebuildbcd, fixmbr. Result: total Windows installations found:0
  • Launched notepad -> save as. It showed only my 16gb pen drive (which is installation media), not my SSD.
  • My laptop has a 512GB SSD but it's not shown in the "save as" dialog box.

I need a fix for this BSOD error without a complete Windows reinstall. Please help

cmd scan says installed windows 0. mine is asus tuf gaming 15 lap, brand new one. bios does recognize my 512gb ssd. but why not cmd??
Check BIOS.
See if OS drive is being detected there.
If it's not detected, then drive is dead. Get a new drive.

If it is detected, then continue testing.
Boot from Windows installation media and execute following in command prompt
(press Shift+F10 to open command prompt)
diskpart
list disk
select disk 0
list partition
detail disk
list volume
Make a screenshot (with your phone camera) and show here.

yes bios detects my ssd. its a new lap, few month used, so no problem with the ssd
cmd does not detect it. when i enter list vol, only pen drive is displayed, not the ssd
save as option in notepad also shows only pen drive
after lot of research, i found that my lap has secure boot feature enabled, it denies access to ssd by unauthorised agents. could that be the reason why my ssd was not detected?

Does diskpart/list disk command show your SSD?
Can you show requested screenshot?

If BIOS shows the drive and diskpart/list disk - doesn't,
then create a new windows installation media with latest windows version.
Your installation media may be outdated.

Disable secure boot and see, if that changes anything.

First, thanks for your reply.

Status update:
I disabled secure boot in bios
Does diskpart lists SSD? - yes, it does list my SSD
I also checked with notepad.exe -> save as, now I can see my SSD listed

Here's the screenshot

This cmd is from windows inbuilt advanced options, not from usb installation media

You're not showing entire command output.
I don't see result of
list disk
list partition.

Only USB drive is being shown.
It appears your storage device is either not being detected or is completely empty - no partitions/no data.
both list disk & list partition commands show only my usb drive. not my ssd
but when i type same commands in cmd of advanced boot options, I can see my ssd partitions listed. I have already shown this in my earlier screenshot

Then do those commands from advanced boot options and show result.
You didn't show list partition command output.

Your windows installation media is probably outdated and doesn't have necessary storage drivers included.
That's why it's not showing all the drives.
You'd have to create a new windows installation media with latest windows installer version.

Executing the same commands in advanced boot options gives expected results, my SSD with all its partitions and volumes are listed (as shown in my 1st screenshot)

But the issue is, I am unable to reach advanced boot options now. Till afternoon I was able to reach advanced options. Now the PC boots straight into bitlocker recovery window, no matter I enter the key or not, I am left with no option but to shutdown my PC. Tried multiple times but I could reach advanced boot options

I have previous experience with BSOD errors, have used advanced boot options or installation media to solve such errors. But this one is irritating. The main difference I guess is the bitlocker encryption. In other PCs, there was no such thing as bitlocker encryption, I could access OS drive from installation media, unlike this lap. This lap is Asus tuf gaming 15, new one with bitlocker feature. I've even disabled secure boot option in BIOS settings, but to no avail. Whenever I turn on my lap, right after Asus logo it heads straight to bitlocker recovery key window and failing again and again to start, irritating and wasting my precious time

regarding windows installation media: my installation media is not old, bcoz just before 2 days i downloaded win11iso directly from windows website
waiting for your help

Bitlocker completely changes everything.
If you can't unlock it, then data is not recoverable.

Clean your SSD and reinstall windows or restore from backup. But I'm guessing - you probably haven't made any backups.
And don't use bitlocker next time.

I don't want to reinstall windows bcoz I have many important files in c drive that I can't afford to loose
What's the way out?

That's the cost of bitlocker and not having any backups.
You have to get rid of bitlocker encryption first.
But since you can't unlock it anymore (probably because of some file system corruption), then there is no access to your encrypted data.

It's like putting your valued items in a safe and then damaging safe lock mechanism, so lock doesn't fit anymore.

What could have caused file system corruption??
