BSOD from messing with msconfig 0x00000074

Hi Everyone,

So I was messing with msconfig, and accidentally set my maximum memory to zero. Now my computer is BSOD with error code 0x00000074, which means bad ram or bad memory etc. But I know I have good ram and I'm pretty sure it has to do with that setting saving at zero maximum memory.

Now my question is, how do I edit that and change it through the cmd prompt or through another method?

I have no chance in hell doing a recovery or repair.

calculate: how much MB of RAM do you have times by a million (1,000,000).
formula: RAM(in MB) x 1,000,000

try this: right before the windows logo comes up, press F9 until there is a few lines of text. In "MAXMEM=0", replace the "0" with your caculated answer and try again.

Jonmor68 - thanks for the loving comment. I'm not asking for negative comments directed towards me. I was trying to set my ram to read the full 12gb but it auto set back to 0 all the time, and when I tried to set it back again after a few restarts, it set it at a weird lower number than that. I have 12gb installed running in tri-channel, but only reads 3.99 usable and I was trying to follow someones tip in setting that to 12288 which is what someone told me to put it at. Although you probably aren't trying to be negative, you are. Thanks and I've gone through the safemode, fails with bsod, and I tried repair install, failed, and I tried running memtest and pass all test, and I tried running the cmd prompt through the w7 install disk to see if i can do any repairs, failed too.

Hi edmond,

Can you be a little more specific to what I'm suppose to see? I'm mashing my F9 button right before the windows loading screen on my windows 7 ultimate 64bit but nothing is happening. Also I have 12gb ram, so according to your formula: its 12,000gb x 1,000,000 = 12,000,000,000. I remember in the msconfig>boot>advance boot options>maximum memory it said 12288, but I may be wrong.

Hi,

No safe mode also BSOD. System Restore failed. I fixed it however and it was by reinstalling windows 7 on a different hard drive and than going to the msconfig>advance boot options and setting the right memory configuration for that specific windows install. WIN it worked and saved all my programs and etc.

So thank you community for the input and suggestions!

I also faced same problem. Windows 7 did reset my maximum ram allocation to 256 MB while I entered 4 GB. Some people asked me to start windows in safe mode and it worked for my case. Windows 7 managed to start the pc with 256 ram.
