BSOD on boot: Machine Check Exception

When I was using my computer the other day it suddenly restarted. Upon trying to start windows I received a BSOD with a machine check exception. Booting off the original installation media results in a very brief, often only partially rendered BSOD with a WHEA uncorrectable error. Attempting to boot Ubuntu gave something along the lines of kernel panic: CPU context corrupt. The system is at stock settings and has always run very cool under a custom water loop. It also passes Memtest86 v4.3.7. The mains power might have had a moment as there was a power failure that night with another computer reporting the PSU surge protection had been triggered. The computer is plugged into a surge protector though. It looks like I need a new CPU but I wanted to know if I should do anything else first. Please find specs below:

Processor: Intel Core i7 7700k

MoBo: Asus ROG Maximus IX Code

RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR4 2x8GB 3200MHz

Video Card: Asus Geforce GTX 1080ti founders edition

PSU: Corsair AX860
 


Thank you very much for your reply jankerson. The bios is up to date, there wasn't any oc on the cpu and while the watercooling makes it super awkward to remove the graphics card I did disconnect it's power and plug the video cable into the motherboard. No difference.

Have you tried to do a clean install yet?
 


I never even get to the point where I have that option. I don't think the issue is windows as ubuntu complains as well; I think the issue is the hardware.
 


Does it actually boot into Windows?

I would strip it down to the basic, take out the water cooling, put in an air cooler and unhook everything from the MB, drives AIO stuff.

Have you tried a different HD?

Could be the MB or the CPU so you will likely have to strip it down anyway.


 


No it absolutely does not boot into windows. I do not have an air cooler and have already tried disconnecting hard drives. It doesn't seem to matter which drive, or even if no drives are connected other than the usb - same result.
 


You are down to the MB or the CPU, could be either one.

I would RMA the CPU 1st since you are getting video when hooked into the MB graphics.
 


Unless you have another machine there that's LGA 1151 no.

Start with the CPU, RMA that 1st.
 


It seems the processor is too old to return so i would have to buy a new one. No suggestions for making sure it's at fault?
 


Should be under Warranty.

There is NOTHING you can do at home unless you have either a known working LGA 1151 CPU or another LGA 1151 motherboard to test.
 
Hey guys,

Got exactly the same issue. Here's the workaround I did applied :
- Disabled Turbo Mode from the BIOS : I was able to boot Windows 10
- Limit CPU in power supply options to 50% maximum in order to avoid BSOD during using my computer

Could this situation confirms there's an issue on the CPU ?

Here's my setup :
- CPU : Intel i5 9600k
- MB : ASUS TUF Z390-PLUS GAMING (Wifi)
- RAM : Corsair 4x8Go Vengeance 3000Mhz
- GPU : Sapphire RX 5700 XT Pulse
- PSU : Fractal 760W Platinum (new coz I thought issue were from there)
