[SOLVED] BSOD while playing Fallout shelter quite daily.

I have run both reports and came up with some new exceptions, the KMODE can be hardware or software but is usually down to driver or firmware incompatibility.

Dump 1: https://pste.eu/p/zM5C.html KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
Dump 2: https://pste.eu/p/JDKm.html DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Before I cover these steps, it's worth noting I may be going over previous ground or there may be reasons for the "out of date" items - just going off what I see:

  • The NVIDIA drivers are out of date
  • Audio driver is pointed as cause. You may want to disable this.
  • I would remove Avira and just run on Windows Defender for the time being.
  • I'd also check if your HWInfo has...

I found out that I have VIA sound chip managed to get VIA HD sound drivers from 2016 and installed them.
Also I had quite big windows update (Version 10.0.18362.295). And here comes new BSOD while playing game:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/5p6y2d8iv5x19nd/081519-10656-01.dmp/file:(
Without wainting for longer I installed new PCI audio card already after this BSOD. I will post how it goes.

It looks like both crashes were caused by Panda. Have you tried temporarily removing it yet? If not, I would consider doing so. This may or may not help.

Thank you, I will move to other antivirus again. I think about "Avira Free Security Suite".

The following crashed:

May 10 2019 rt640x64.sys Realtek NICDRV 8169 PCIe GBE Family Controller driver https://www.realtek.com/en/

Full results: https://pste.eu/p/B7PT.html

Look for an update or slightly older version (try a different version from what you are currently using).

Sometimes the dump files are not 100% accurate. The may say things like Firefox or Chrome crashed, when in fact it was the LAN driver that caused the crash.

And then sometimes there's multiple reasons for crashes. Fix one and you get less crashes. Fix another and get less crashes. Fix a another and no more crashes.

Hopefully we are narrowing it down.

This wouldn't be surprising if it's the AV crashing.
Probably is LAN drivers as both of your AVs will be using it constantly.
Would also explain fallout shelter problem as I believe this accesses online to play?
Yes, that is completely possible. I installed some older Realtek LAN driver thing that I see in the control panel, but not near the clock. I will post how it goes with it.

dump files show you what crashed, they don't always tell you why. most blame ntoskrnl, its not that windows has become suicidal or anything, its just it was asked to do something it can't. Its why I normally look at driver list instead of actual dump. its only rarely it blames something you can recognise like an actual driver name or directx... directx errors normally GPU drivers. its a matter of learning connections, what drivers likely to cause what errors. Its easy when the errors are ones you know

Chrome crashes I normally blame lan drivers. Its odd for newer ones to cause problems, realtek normally good... but then board is old so perhaps their support for 10 year old hardware is where line is drawn? You might want to look at a new Wifi adapter and just not use that driver.

I would have just used Defender until you sure its not the AV causing error

  • I'd be tempted to disable ALCOR SD Card Driver using |Autoruns (link in report)
  • The ASACPI.sys is also a previous BSOD causer.
Also @gardenman, liking the new look, I think the Blue/White is much nicer! And easier on the eyes.

did you remove avast? if only to remove it from suspicion

shame PC so old or I would suggest driver verifer. think I said this before. There is always the chance it won't cause a boot loop - it would at least show driver name instead of us finding its victims and working backwards. It might not even be lan, any device could be causing the disruption

cmudax3.sys - cmedia audio driver... that could explain the audiobg bsod you were getting.

Do you have a microphone? Driver is from 2012, way too old for win 10

Do you have an Asus Xonar? newest drivers are from 2015 - https://www.asus.com/au/Sound-Cards/Xonar_DX/HelpDesk_Download/

PC Tailor: think you find that intel ide storage driver is part of win 10

what parts are actually in the PC or attached? Apart from Motherboard we didn't get much more info :)

Thank you all for so many comments.

I removed Avast and replaced it with Panda and then Avira. I will move to windows defender as recommended. Also, I will disable ALCOR SD Card Driver which I never use these days. And if those two things will not help I will try Driver Verifier. I never used it before.

The NVIDIA drivers, I think are the latest possible for this video card, it does not receive further updates now.
Cmedia audio driver and device I added just recently as it was suspected that BSOD is caused by the integrated sound card and drivers.
Externally very few things connected just basic A4tech keyboard, Logitech mouse and Samsung printer which was powered off during all BSODs in this thread. In the first post, there is a link to dxdiag output with all internal parts listed, I think.

this isn't funny, we try 3 Av and they all crash, and we try a new soundcard and it causes crashes.

use defender, it doesn't add any drivers to list.
remove new sound card as it isn't helping really. it caused one of the last 2 BSOD
do you use the VPN at all?

must be running out of drivers soon

Yes, only now I learned that Windows 10 has antivirus by default and I do not need to have others like before. As I tried 3 of them I found not surprising that Avira is the least popular of them all. What kind of a pain to uninstall it an opening bunch of web pages endlessly asking what is wrong and again leaving behind other parts of it.
I do not use VPN, but I saw Avira installer installed one for me. I removed it already. without even trying.
I also disabled ALCOR SD Card Driver. I will remove that sound card too as it is not helping clearly.
So far no BSOD since Saturday morning.

Only remove things if you get any more BSOD. Since its been a few days, wait and see.

Defender is good enough for while we look for errors. Defender is getting better at what it does although there still are better choices. I would try Bitdefender after we fix this, its what PC Tailor and I use

VPN might have been removed already, I was looking at an old report
