Dear All

I recently moved into a house to to find that in nearly every room there is a bt openreach phone line sockets.

Now I have connected my home hub 4 to the phone line socket via an adsl filter and I also have my phone attached to the socket via the filter - everything is working!

Now my main question is since I have all these spare phone sockets can I somehow use them as Ethernet ports to connect my pc to them.

I have tried using a rj45 to bt connector but that does not work.

I have the regular broadband package and not fibre

Therefore I would appreciate any solutions.

Thank you

Solution
The type of connection is not your problem, you could if tried hard likely put a RJ45 on electrical cord and plug into the power mains...and likely destroy you equipment and possibly kill yourself.

Just because ADSL and ethernet both carry computer data does not mean they are the same. This is the reason you need a modem in the first place.

Now if you are really lucky and the phone lines all go back to one central room and the wire is actually ethernet cable you can with a lot of work covert them to ethernet jacks......they would then not work for phone.

If they are not centrally wired and are daisy chained together then you have little hope of converting or using them for ethernet.
Hi
No that will not work as those sockets are connected to the phone line and cannot be used as an ethernet system.
It should be noted that the voltage in the phone line can be high enough to damage the ethernet controller on your motherboard and you do not want to connect your computer to it.

Hi I have tried connecting the modem/router to a different phone line socket with the adsl filter and I am able to access the internet, therefore is it possible to maybe use a rj45 to adsl cable to connect the pc to a phone line? Thanks

No,you cannot use the phone lines as an ethernet network.
UK phone lines are daisy chained together and as such each extension socket is connected to the master socket using the same cable.
In an Ethernat network each access socket has its own cable which is connected to its own port on the router or switch so the two systems are totally incompatable.
The modem is designed to connect to phone lines so will work on any phone socket in the house but will work best on the master socket.
The PC ethernet socket is not designed to plug into the telephone system but into an Ethernet network.
I repeat do not plug your PC directly into the telephone line using the ethernet port as the voltage in the phone line is in the order of 50 Volts and this could damage your motherboard it will also break the terms of service with BT and you could be liable for any damage to the exchange.
