"Budget" 24GB RAM Build

I know that 24GB and budget probably doesn't go together, but I do some memory intensive numerical computing where having 24GB would be extremely helpful. I haven't put anything together since 06 with a C2D, so be easy on me

Video Card??? Something cheap that will work on 64-Bit Linux. I looked at the 8400GS, but it looks like plenty of people are having problems.



Comes out to a bit under $1000 without the video card. Any suggestions/replacements would be appreciated. I have looked at going the server board/workstation route, but it seems that would definitely overshoot my budget.

I have a couple of hundred gigs of ordered binary timeseries data partitioned by date and UUID. Partitions are loaded into memory, something akin to an in memory database and queried in real-time. I do this processing on a 64GB lab server at my university, but there is typically a long job processing queue so I supplement the work on my own computer with 8GB RAM and it's a pain in the ass and makes the programming side of it more difficult . The lab's budget is locked up for the year, so here I am wanting to put together something on my own to make my life easier.
