Looking to upgrade my PC as I currently have an R9 280 and i5 2400 and it is in dire need of an upgrade. Already got my eyes set on a GTX 980 as I got a real good price for it but I am unsure on which CPU to pair with it. I had my eyes on a 4690k but I'm not sure if I would need something that powerful just for a 980.

What is the cheapest CPU I can get while still getting full performance out of my 980? AMD or intel suggestions or welcome as I can purchase a new mobo accordingly.

Why Intel?
Yes i know Intel processors are better in single-performance but you can get also a Ryzen 5 1600 which it is a 6 core and 12 threads CPU and you can find them for $189 on Amazon.
They are better than the 4690K and the i3 8350K.
The mobo's are also cheap for Ryzen CPUs.

Intel is better for his case, because while Ryzen is good for professional tasks like Photoshop and Video Editing. Intel has far better gaming performance at most price points. Check out the link I posted, in almost all games the i3-8350k beats out Ryzen 1600 by a healthy margin. This makes sense since games these days rarely take advantage of more than 3-4 cores and single-thread performance matters more.

Well...
I did some research and you are mostly right but the difference is almost 3-9 FPS.
And he wants a budget CPU so the Ryzen 5 1600 is a bang for the buck.

Yes you are right but the motherboards for intel chipsets and sockets are expensive than the ryzen motherboards.
