Which is better:

or

I am also going to be overclocking both of these builds. Looking to play AAA games at medium to high setting with 30+ frame rate.

Some of the more demanding AAA games require multiple cores to run well. In that case the 860k would be better. Games like GTA V seem to have a stuttering problem with the dual core Pentium so I would have to go with the 860k.

If overclocking isn't a must you could also go for an i3 build which would come to around the same cost as the two build posted using a stock cooler and would game better. If you use a H97 or Z97 board you could upgrade to Broadwell when it is released.

i 2nd the option for intel i3 build.
If you want a budget AMD build for gaming, then the fx6300 is the sweet spot.

this is going to perform better than any overclocked athlon x4

The Athlon X4 860k uses the new steamroller cores which are higher in IPC and more powerful compared to the rest of the FX line which still use the Piledriver modules. It would be a better choice for most games.

So what build would you recommend (that would use an i3)?
