Solution

You cannot be more wrong. First of all its not about the age but about the fact that 4460 is a Haswell refresh. In which case the only chipsets that where supporting them from the start was Z97 and H97. For B85 and H81 there was not chipset upgrades.
Now if you think any mobo out on the market will have updated bios then you are naive, how about old revisions, old batches, old shipments laying in the stores everywhere. To be sure you would have to simply ask the seller about the bios revision.
So long story...

So long story short, you either call the shop and straight ask about it, borrow an older CPU and upgrade yourself or get H97.

what he ^^^ said. i'd buy in person to check the mobo revision and BIOS before paying for it (usually labelled on the board!) and get an H97 no matter what anyways. i've had great luck with AssRock boards lately, and Gigabyte has been fine too for the most part.

R u shy to call the shop then? It's 2 mins of talk maybe you will be lucky and get some recent revision maybe another brand instead of MSI, if not then yeah H97 is the last resort but at least it will be a bit better platform for further upgrades anyways.

actually some boards can update the BIOS without needing a CPU. i think some Gigabyte ones do or maybe it's Asus. can anyone here chime in? or maybe start a new thread asking which LGA1150 boards can update BIOS without a CPU. you usually have to copy the bios onto a USB stick and put it into a specific USB port.

or find a friend who will lend you his processor!

Age is relevant here. The i5 4460 has been on the market for around 15 months now. Before the refresh cpus were even released, motherboard manufactures started working on BIOS revisions to support them. You would have to find a "new" motherboard that's over 12 months old to have a problem. Is that possible? Sure. Is it likely? No it isn't. I wouldn't buy one used though.

I was thinking about the same but without a confirmation thats not really what i would suggest for someone who want to be sure about the buy, its good question for the new topic or even a TH article 😉

...especially on budget chipsets /mobo models right?
Haswell refresh release date = Q2 13
H81m p33 Haswell refresh BIOS support = Q1 14 (V1.4... and 4460 was known to work properly from 1.6 Q3 14)
How is age relevant in this math? Is there a certain period that we should be looking for to be sure we are safe if so please enlighten us?
