Hi, I'm looking to move from my old i5 4690 + gtx 770 setup to something newer.
I play mainly competitive games (rocket league, csgo, hoping to maybe play some fivem once I get the new setup)so I am thinking a 2060 would suit my needs fine, even a 1660 could. I'm not entirely sure what parts to go with next to these. I'm on a fairly tight budget and trying to stay as cheap as possible. So far I was thinking an i3 12100 with a ddr4 motherboard and ram (ddr5 is expensive), but I'm not sure what motherboard would be good. I know not to cheap out on the motherboard so what would be the cheapest, but also realistic motherboard to buy for this setup? Or is this cpu not good enough for a 2060 build? I'm happy to go with a 1660 instead if the cpu is not good enough because buying a better cpu would not be affordable on my budget.

Thanks in advance.

Please stylize your post with information asked of in this thread;

We can move forward with suggestions. You've mentioned budget a number of times but we will need to know the amount(alongside other questions that need an answer as stated in the link posted above). Please add the specs to your current system to give us an understanding of what you're working with(and what we'll be upgrading you from), like so;
CPU:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:

I suppose the better question is what is your complete parts list now? A lot of it could be re-used.

DDR3 obviously not. But your PSU, Storage, Chassis, Fans, and CPU cooler are all possibilties.

Nothing wrong with an RTX2060 if that will get the job done. But maybe consider an AMD RX6600XT or 6650XT. Should be cheaper and just as good for competitive FPS and eSports. Unless there are particular Nvidia features you are after.

I think your CPU choice is good for a budget build.

Right I think I didnt phrase this right. I'm not really upgrading my old PC, I'm gonna sell that and build a new one.
Either way my current build is:
CPU: i5-4690
GPU: GTX 770
Motherboard: Asus gryphon z87
Ram: ddr3 g.skill ripjaws
SSD: samsung evo 1TB sata drive
PSU: LDLC gold 80+ 650w
Chassis: old corsair case no idea what its called

I want to spend in and around 1000 euros (I'm living in Ireland) and go with either a 1660 or a 2060 which are both within my budget at the moment. The cpu I saw as affordable for me at the moment was the i3-12100 but I might be wrong. My preferred site to buy parts is amazon UK.
I'm going micro atx as the chassis is cheaper and I am hoping to sell my old pc so I'll need to keep the chassis with it.

Sorry if I'm not asking the questions correctly I'm a bit slow :)

Could I go for a cheaper PSU? Like a cv550. Or if I buy a cv550 and put that into my old build, moving my gold 80+ LDLC 650w to the new build?

Im guessing you are going to use a current 1080p display ?

Were it me I would actually spend more on the motherboard, hoping for CPU upgrades later on. 13500/13700 could be dropped in a few years from now. That RM650 is going to be good for at least one more tier up in power requirements. Should also make the computer more efficient which could help on your power bill a little. Should be quite silent as well. Same for the CPU cooler, unnecessary but it will be quieter than the stock Intel cooler.

Fast NVMe storage for no real reason either. You could go with a much cheaper SATA drive or a PCIe 3.0 NVMe drive that is dramless. But games are getting bigger, so I think planning ahead for a 125GB game isn't a bad idea.

At least if you want it to last as long as your Haswell system.

(also that motherboard I picked has WiFi for only like £5, a decent selling point later on)

Always a good idea to not cheap out ont he PSU, heres another option:

Would a Gigabyte B660M DS3H be a good choice?

It is compatible, so far as I am aware. The good choice part really comes down to whether it offers the features and price you wish to have. I have used Gigabyte boards in some budget builds over the years and they all worked fine in those regards. I once got a gifted an Aorus board where the previous owner was obsessed with overclocking an i5 to 5GHz and power delivery/VRM was quite damaged. Just the same, if I left the power management at auto and set clocks to something reasonable, it would still OC stable after that damage. Smelled a little funny, but that didn't present an operational difficulty. I gifted the system to a friend's son after his dad purchased a few parts for it and so far as I am aware is still working fine.

DSH3 is a budget board for sure. It only has VRM heatsink on the main power phases and nothing on the minor ones. Plenty for an i3 or i5. I wouldn't trust it with an i7 or i9 unless you locked the power down.

Gigabyte motherboards are fine. I have had quite a few and I have no complaints. Admittedly I tend towards the higher end ones.
Z87, Z270, Z490 being the most recent. ASUS is fine too, though their reputation has been middling to bad in recent times. Backwards capacitors being the most recent in the news. High prices, and they don't outdo the competition.

I was a huge fan of ASUS for a long time, particularly around the 4th gen Intel era. I had a run of bad luck with their motherboards and have sworn off of them. I like MSI high end options and have had good service out of ASRock boards for mid level builds as well.
